The music of The Kinks, The Skillet Lickers, Carter Family, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, The Band, Syd Barrett, Bonnie Prince Billy, The Cars, Blondie, Boomtown Rats, John Hartford, Loretta Lynn, Elvis Presley, David Byrne (and Talking Heads), Peter Gabriel (and Genesis), The Pentangle, and countless others. Other influences include: the Bible, various works of Jewish fiction, great gobs of post-WWII American fiction, the plays of Jean Genet and Samuel Beckett, Dada, the mountains, Dan's back porch, good food (and lots of it!), and the many friends to whom we owe so much.
Mark
writes the songs, sings them, and plays guitar. Classic rock, country, folk, and blues all make their appearance. His lyrics ask epistemological questions in a style of which Strunk, White, Waylon and Johnny might've approved.
Dan
adds support and color to the tunes with an array of instruments and vocal stylings. He has devoted much of his life to the study of popular music from the 1600's to today in an attempt to amass a great big bunch of old tricks up his sleeve.
Crystal
plays a strong and steady upright bass. In a past life (and still, from time to time) a bass clarinetist, her string bass experience is in traditional Appalachian old-time music. She provides a solid grounding and careful eye (and ear) to the whole circus.
Dead sober as they may be, their music often sounds a bit drunk. Blame the intoxicating splendor of life itself. Ain't we got fun?
It is a great day to be alive! What Question can I ask to empower myself and others? How can I improve the experience of those I encounter today? What can I do to facilitate your Gift?
Yesterday Is History Tomorrow is a Mystery Today is a Gift... That's why we call it the Present
Sounds good, you guys!! Hey, Dan! Been a very long time since I've seen you!! Glad to see you still playin music!! Take care. I gotta try to get over there to check you guys out sometime.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the inspiration. The music y'all did was really motivational for me early on and made me work harder. Y'all are great. Go get signed on Lost Highway and remember me 10 years from now as having the most extravagantly wonderful beard known to man. It would make a great cover for an American Classic. Seriously though thanks so much!
How do we rock thee? Let us count the ways. We rock thee to the depth and breadth and height our souls can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. We rock thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. We rock thee freely, as men strive for Right; We rock thee purely, as they turn from Praise. We rock thee with a passion put to use In our old griefs, and with our childhoods' faith. We rock thee with a beat we seemed to lose With our lost picks, --- we rock thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all our lives! --- and, if God choose, We shall but rock thee better after death.
