Greg's Interests
|
| General | I've kind of been obsessing over old newspaper comics lately. As a kid I had some old Pogo trade paperbacks, so I've sought out a bunch of those on eBay, and I've also been getting into the Popeye and Peanuts collections by Fantagraphics and the "Walt and Skeezix" Gasoline Alley collections by Drawn and Quarterly, as well as the amazing full-size Sunday collection - Frank King's Sunday Gasoline Alleys of this era are just beautiful, and reading them full-size is highly recommended.
I also take stereo (3-D) slides with a Stereo Realist camera, which is really fun and rewarding. I like vintage View-Master reels - packets from various locales are fun, especially of local areas from years ago or world's fairs, but I also love the ones of cartoon characters made with little sculpture-filled dioramas. And recently I discovered a pre-View-Master format called Tru-Vue from the '30s which is cool in a whole different way, black and white photographs on a strip of 35mm film that you run through a little viewer. | | Music | I like good pop songs with catchy melodies and fun guitars the most, but I go outside that quite often too. My iPod is stuffed to the gills. Some stuff I like: Mary Timony Band, The Beatles, Longstocking, The Soft Boys, The Kinks, Thelonious Monk, P-Funk, Guided By Voices, Solex, Devo, Gershwin, SMiLE, Elvis Costello, Buddy Holly, Camper Van Beethoven, Big Star, The Wrens, Quasi (early/middle), Scott Joplin, Raymond Scott Quintette, Frank Sinatra, Sam Phillips, The Who, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Charles-Valentin Alkan. Most recently I'm obsessing over various versions of Bach's Goldberg Variations. | | Movies | I like all kinds of stuff, from silents to artsy to goofy comedies to big popcorn blockbusters. Here's a few:
Wet Hot American Summer, The Lady Vanishes, The General (Buster Keaton), Grey Gardens, Spider-Man I and II and hopefully III, Dazed and Confused, The Apartment, Kitten With A Whip, American Splendor, Glengarry Glen Ross, Sherman's March, Forgotten Silver, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Sullivan's Travels, Vernon Florida, Nuts In May, The Apple, The Double Life of Veronique, Teenagers From Outer Space, Casino Royale. | | Television | I get most of my tv on DVD: Freaks and Geeks, Lost, Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends, Buffy/Angel/Firefly, Stella, The Larry Sanders Show, TV CARNAGE!, Trigger Happy TV, South Park (when they do hilarious shows about goofy kids rather than naive political commentary about how dangerous Al Gore is), Spaced (by the Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz guys), Curb Your Enthusiasm, shows about otters or beavers or muskrats. | | Books | Here are some things I like: Flann O'Brien (The Third Policeman is great), Nathanael West, Raymond Carver, 52 McGs (a collection of New York Times obituaries by Robert McG. Thomas Jr., incredible little biographies), Dashiell Hammett, A Confederacy of Dunces, Walt Kelly, Elsie Segar, Joe Matt, Harvey Pekar, minicomics by nice interesting people, Flat Stanley (only the best children's book ever, about Stanley, who is flattened when his bulletin board falls on him during the night, and his subsequent adventures being flown like a kite, mailed, lowered into a storm drain, etc.). | | Heroes | People who make me happier, such as Charles Schulz, Dashiell Hammett, Alfred Hitchcock, Coyle and Sharpe, Lennon and McCartney. People who bring it. |
