About Glenn Frey The following is condensed from the GlennFreyOnline.com Biography
Glenn Frey, the multi-talented mastermind behind the Eagles and gifted solo artist in his own right, came into the world on November 6, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. He became interested in music at an early age, beginning piano lessons at the age of five and teaching himself how to play guitar.
Detroit was a happenin' place musically in the mid-60s, and soon Glenn was playing professionally. Early on, he formed the Hideouts, named after a local club (they later changed their name to The Subterraneans.) After some personnel changes, that band became The Mushrooms. It was this band which was his most successful around Detroit. They cut a single entitled "Such a Lovely Child" in 1966 with the B-side "Burned." Rock musician Bob Seger, who produced and co-wrote the band’s single, was able to spot Glenn’s talent right away. In 1968, Glenn sung backup as well as added guitar to Seger's album Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man.
Meanwhile, the Mushrooms had split. Although Glenn enrolled in college, his heart wasn't in it. He briefly joined a folk group called The Four of Us, then quit that and co-founded the Heavy Metal Kids. Still, Glenn was dissatisfied. He went west to California to try to make it in the music biz.
Upon arrival, Glenn hooked up with a girlfriend who had preceded him to L.A. Her sister happened to be dating John David Souther, and the two became fast friends. Soon they formed Longbranch Pennywhistle. They released a self-titled album together in 1969 which flopped, but began years of songwriting collaborations. Glenn also met Jackson Browne at this time; Glenn and J.D. even rented a house with him. They started hanging out at the Troubadour, a club that was the favorite of a lot of up-and-coming rockers and rocker wannabes. There Glenn met Linda Ronstadt, who invited him to be a part of her touring band in 1971.
It was also at the Troubadour that Glenn met Don Henley. Glenn invited Don to be a part of Linda's touring band as well. Glenn thought of Don as a potential bandmate from the outset. At this point, Longbranch Pennywhistle was history. Now solo, Glenn was told by David Geffen that he needed a band to be marketable. Meanwhile, Don's group Shiloh was also failing. The time was right for them to team up. With the help of Ronstadt and her manager, Glenn enlisted fellow backing-band members Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. Glenn showed up at Geffen's door with his new group, soon to be dubbed the Eagles, and the rock'n'roll scene would never be the same.
The Eagles became one of the biggest bands of the decade and one of the best-selling bands of all time. Beginning with their first self-titled album and the single "Take It Easy," they were putting out hits.
Their second album, Desperado, was not as commercially successful as their debut. However, its sophisticated "concept" approach shows how Glenn's musical ideas, along with Don's, were evolving. Eventually, it received deserved recognition as a high quality piece of work.
With their third album On the Border, they cemented their status as household names with the smash hit "Best of My Love." Glenn was well on his way to stardom. In fact, this was a heady time for the Eagles in more ways than one. As the popularity of the band soared, so did the egos. Glenn and Don had by now established themselves as the power brokers of the band, and when they decided to take the Eagles in a more rock-oriented direction, they added Don Felder and relegated Bernie to a minor role. Disgusted, he left in 1975 after the band completed its fourth album, One of These Nights, and was replaced by Joe Walsh.
The Eagles reached their commercial peak with Hotel California, another concept album, this time presenting the disillusionment that results when one has seen the darker side of fame.
The pressure to top that with the next album exacerbated tensions within the band. Randy was the next to quit in 1977. He was replaced by fellow Poco alumnus Timothy B. Schmit.
Unfortunately, the band became caught up in the excesses of the seventies - sex and drugs. At first, it seemed a bacchanalian fantasy come to life, but it began to wear on the guys. Glenn's drug use was escalating to alarming degrees (he finally quit in the mid-80s). It was time to start making some changes.
One of these changes occurred in 1978, when Glenn decided he wanted to settle down with Texas debutante Janie Beggs. With Janie's privileged background and refined artistic tastes, it seemed like a case of opposites attracting. They eventually married in 1983, but by 1986, opposites repelled and they divorced.
There were also changes occurring in his professional life. While the band had always had conflicts, things were coming to a head during the making of The Long Run. Power struggles and personality conflicts caused resentments and dissatisfaction among the band members, with the exception of Timothy B. Schmit who was more sad than angry.
Glenn tried to keep it together for a time, but it became too much. As the recording sessions for The Long Run dragged on, what had once been fulfilling was becoming a painful drudgery. A solo career was starting to look very tempting.
Glenn had already half-way decided to leave the Eagles, but it was a benefit gig for California Senator Alan Cranston on July 31, 1980 that finally pushed him over the edge. The hostility seething behind the scenes reared its ugly head for all to see when Felder expressed disinterest in the Cranstons in their hearing. Furious, Glenn confronted Felder before the band took the stage, and the two spent the entire concert exchanging threats. Sure enough, it erupted into a physical confrontation afterwards, and it was then Glenn decided that he "had to get out." A short while later, he called up Don Henley and told him that he needed to go his own way.
Once Glenn went out on his own, he began working closely with Eagles collaborator Jack Tempchin. Glenn soon released his first solo album, No Fun Aloud, in 1982. The hits "The One You Love" and "I Found Somebody" established him as a solo artist, and his star rose further with "Smuggler’s Blues" in 1984. That song attracted the attention of the writers for Miami Vice, who enlisted Glenn to play a smuggler's pilot. At this point, Glenn became much more visible as a solo name. His two most popular songs, "The Heat Is On" and "You Belong to the City," were released at this time.
His interest in acting was piqued, and he got a starring role in the film Let's Get Harry in 1986. In 1989, he appeared in a story arc on the series Wiseguy. He even starred in his own TV show called South of Sunset in 1993. After that show was canceled in its infancy, Glenn refocused on his first love, music.
On the musical front, he released Soul Searchin’ in 1988. It produced the top 40 hit “True Love." In 1992, he put out Strange Weather and an accompanying video and live album. Strange Weather brought Glenn's work to a new level. Whether light, dark, or romantic, each song succeeded melodically and lyrically. It is his most sophisticated work to date.
The late 80s and early 90s saw some major life changes for Glenn. One of these was Glenn's new dedication to fitness. In 1986, Glenn was hospitalized with diverticulitis. As a result, he swore off drugs and started working out. (Unfortunately, his intestinal problems recurred and he was forced to undergo his first surgery in 1989). The drastic change showed; when it came time to promote Soul Searchin', he looked like a different man. The transformation inspired his song "Livin' Right."
While filming the video for "Livin' Right," Glenn met a dancer named Cindy. They married in 1990 and had their first child, a daughter, in 1991. Within a couple of years they had a son as well. Glenn became a daddy a third time with a second son about ten years later. His new family gave Glenn a new outlook on life.
He gained a new outlook on the Eagles as well. While initially adamant that the Eagles were through for good in 1980, by 1990, Glenn was starting to rethink a reunion. However, he was still skittish. An attempt in 1990 was called off after he became impatient with the scheduling issues and personal problems amongst his bandmates. Still, reunion rumblings persisted. When Glenn and Joe Walsh went on the road together in 1993 as the Party of Two, speculation continued.
It wasn't until 1994, though, that Glenn agreed to "resume" the Eagles with Hell Freezes Over. His change of heart occurred after he had a positive experience with the band when they got together to appear in Travis Tritt's video for his cover of "Take It Easy." As a result, Glenn gave the reunion project the green light.
The massive success of the Hell Freezes Over video and tour proved that the Eagles still held incredible appeal. While the tour had to be stopped temporarily due to another attack of diverticulitis, Glenn didn't let that stop him from finishing the tour as soon as he recuperated from his surgery.
After the tour ended in 1996, Glenn did a bit more acting, appearing as Arizona Cardinal owner Dennis Wilburn in Jerry Maguire later that year and on Nash Bridges in 1997. In 1998, he became involved in the business end of the music scene. With Peter Lopez, an attorney, he formed the record company Mission Records. The late 90s also saw the Eagles get inducted into the Hall of Fame (1998) and be named the Artists of the Century by the Recording Association of America (1999). Their album Greatest Hits: 1971-1975 was documented as being the best-selling album in music history. Not too shabby.
The Hall of Fame induction featured the only time all seven current and former members of the Eagles played onstage together. The next chapter in the Eagles saga began in 1999 when Glenn joined Felder, Walsh, Schmit, and Henley onstage for concerts to celebrate the millennium in Los Angeles.
The Eagles line-up was to change once more not long after those performances; Felder got the boot. Glenn and Henley thought Felder was a liability to the band rather than an asset to it, and fired him. Felder sued, and the case was finally settled in 2006.
Now a foursome, the Eagles continued to tour all over the world in 2000-2001. Then, after a couple of years off, they began the "Farewell I" tour in 2003, which produced a DVD. That tour morphed into the "California Tour" of 2005 where they sold out show after show in the golden state area.
After a short break in early 2006, the Eagles began touring Europe. Glenn also did several solo shows in July 2006, billed as the "Prelude to Obscurity" tour. In November 2006, Eagles fans were treated to two new songs as part of a promotional deal with Walmart. These songs signaled the coming of the first Eagles studio album in 28 years.
And so, in October of 2007, the Eagles finally released their long-awaited album Long Road Out of Eden, currently available at Walmart and eaglesband.com. Debuting at #1 on the Billboard Charts, Long Road Out of Eden is proof positive that the Eagles' ability to produce high-quality work and performances has not reached an expiration date.
Outside of work, Glenn spends time with his family at their home in California. As a hobby, he often indulges his fondness for golf. Additionally, he is involved in several charities, participating in benefits to raise money for causes such as combating leukemia and child abuse. Other charitable interests include the Aspen Youth Experience, which gives inner-city youths a chance to get out in the mountains, and the Children's Christian Fund. While he donates to many causes, Glenn has said that he finds giving to children's charities the most rewarding: "there are no bad kids."
As of 2008, the Eagles continue to tour to support Long Road Out of Eden. Glenn may do the occasional rare solo show, but for the next couple of years, he's putting the Eagles first. We'll see what happens after that!

This is no war of chieftains or of princes, of dynasties or national ambition; it is a war of peoples and of causes. There are vast numbers, not only in this island but in every land, who will render faithful service in this war but whose names will never be known, whose deeds will never be recorded. This is a war of the Unknown Warriors; but let all strive without failing in faith or in duty, and the dark curse of Hitler will be lifted from our age."
—BBC Broadcast, London, 14 July 1940 ;;.
Today was a day when we remembered many known and unknown heroes who suffered tremendously so that we could enjoy a little bit. One of those were my parents, and your parents too. In a memory of the Unknown Soldier is a song dedicated to my parents, who could be your parents, and to your parents who could be my parents. Unfortunately those Winston Churchill words cited in the beginning of this message still ring true today. But fortunately , We can still sing.
