Please check back with us reguarly as we will post pictures of the animals we currently have available for adoption!

Current animals in the shelter available for adoption:

We have a brief adoption procedure that consists of coming and visiting with our animals to find your new family member, a little paperwork, and an adoption fee. This fee goes to help with our costs to care for these loving and dedicated animals.

..Who We Are..

The Greater Huntsville Humane Society (GHHS) was incorporated in 1969 by 39 charter members as a non-profit, charitable (501) (c) (3) organization. Our mission is to promote the humane treatment of animals. We operate an animal shelter for homeless and unwanted animals and conduct an adoption program to place these animals into suitable homes. We are a privately funded organization and we receive no tax dollars, no government funds and no funds from any national humane organization. We depend entirely on donations, fundraisers and adoptions for funds. All donations to GHHS are tax deductible. We take in pets of all kinds and work to find them the best possible homes. Due to large amounts of unwanted animals, there may be a wait to get an animal into the Humane Society.

..Where We Are..

Our shelter is located on Johnson Road, near the "old" airport and close to the Jaycees building. From Memorial Parkway, go West on Airport Road (if going South on the Parkway, turn right onto Airport; if going North on the Parkway, turn left onto Airport). There is a Copeland's restaraunt (now out of business, but the bldg is still there) on the northwest corner of Airport and the Parkway. Follow this past a golf course on your left, past the Jaycees building on your right. Airport road will become Johnson road. Our building is a tan brick building on the right hand side approximately 1/2 mile past the Leeman Ferry intersection.

Our hours of operation are Tuesday thru Saturday, 10:00 AM until 4:30 PM; however, you may leave a message on our answering machine outside of these hours; or if you find a pet you are interested in, feel free to send an email as is listed with each pet's description.

2008 Annual Dog Ball was a SUCCESS once again this year! We would like to thank all of you that helped support it in each and everyway that you did! No support is too large or too small! THANK YOU!!!!! Here are some pictures from the Ball! Who knows......maybe you'll recognize some faces :-)

..We have many upcoming events! Please keep watching for details!..

Our HOT DOGS AND COOL CATS CALENDAR CONTEST (Fundraiser) WAS AWESOME!!!! We'd like to THANK EVERYONE for showing so much love to their pets and to the animals in the shelter! We had many winners but the REAL WINNERS are the animals at GHHS! THANK YOU ALL!!!!!

    ..ASSISTANCE NEEDED..
    Special Needs Fund:..

We, at the humane society, have established a special needs fund for animals coming into the shelther that have medical conditions which are expensive to treat. Many times due to the cost, we are forced to euthanize animals that would otherwise be wonderfully adoptable if we could afford to treat the condition. Being a non-profit organization that is dependant on public donations, sometimes the high costs are just not feasible - without special donations from our very caring public.

We have also treated several dogs for heartworms and injuries in the recent months which drains our resources. To make it possible for us to continue treating sick or injured, but otherwise adoptable animals, please send donations to:

    Greater Huntsville Humane Society
    ATTN: SPECIAL NEEDS FUND
    2812 Johnson Rd.
    Huntsville, AL 35805

Please make checks out to GHHS.
