The symbol Hz is a measure of frequency per unit of time, or the number
of cycles per second.
Hertz can be used to measure any periodic event; the most common uses
for hertz are to describe radio and audio frequencies.
The term "gigahertz" is typically used in computer processor speed
and radio frequency applications. It can be pronounced either with a
hard "g" sound or with a soft "g" ("j") sound at the beginning of the
word.
Some electrical engineers use "jiga", by analogy with "gigantic".
