About me:
Some see things the way they are and ask, "Why?" I dream things that never were, and ask "Why not?"
- George Bernard Shaw
Thank you for coming to my page, be it because you're a friend, a foe or a fan (?)... do I even have fans?
A tid bit about me: I am a professional photographer and journalist primarily in the automotive industry. Never constant and ever evolving is my motto for life. My name is Giancarlo, however everyone calls me GC because it's easier not because I'm a rapper or anything like that... hah.
Post your comments, thoughts or like some have done... silly rants!
For those wanting to know how this whole lifestyle started, here is a quick blurb. A handful of years ago, I sent an email to a magazine which existed at the time called
Sport Compact National which was a Canadian publication , asking how I can get involved. Since an early age I have been involved with cars, be it helping out friends, visiting shops and admiring the work done and everything in between. One weekend during a drifting exhibition in Toronto at which time I was hanging out with a local 240SX club, I noticed the booth for SCN magazine. I approached asking if anyone from marketing or the editorial department was present. To my surprise, the guy to whom I was speaking to remember my email from over a year ago and asked what I was doing at the show. If that wasn't enough, he asked if I could shoot the event and if the Editor in Chief liked it, that something could be worked out.
The show continued throughout the weekend and I was hot with my shutter snapping some great drifting action from the SignalAuto guys in their S13.5 Silvias. Do keep in mind this was way before any official sanctioned event existed in North America!
On Monday morning I got a call from a guy named Phil, who turned out to be the EinC of SCN magazine. He loved my shots and asked how long I had been doing it, which in reality it had been my first time doing automotive work. I told him the truth to which he replied, "great stuff." He then offered an amount for my images to be published and I fell flat on my face. Who would have known that my passion for automobiles and photography could actually lead to money? He proceeded to give me a trial run in shooting a feature for the upcoming issue to, "test the waters" as he put it. The vehicle was a '72 Datsun 510 with an SR20DET - simply insane! A month passed and Phil called me at home asking if I received the package. My mother then handed me a courier envelope that just arrived and I opened it. As God would have it, I got the cover! Yes, on my first ever feature I got the cover in a leading publication - *faint*
Soon after, I was given a few other features which landed all on back-to-back covers leading to a 5 out of 6 run that year. After that short stint, I realized that for whatever reason God or whatever superior power had given me the talent and opportunity to do this as not only my passion, but as a living.
Six years later and I am still going strong. After working in the editorial departments of a few leading publications, I have gained great experience and understanding of both the front and back-end of the business.
These days, I travel with various car clubs to shows across USA and Canada as well as given the opportunity to hang out with VeilSide in Japan during Tokyo Auto Salon a couple of years back.
Although I am not a religious person, I do thank God (Superior Being) for giving me the talent and most of all opportunity to do what I love the most. It is not very often that someone strikes gold and to me, this is my heaven. What more could one ask in life? Riding in hot cars, test driving cars on the track at break-neck speeds, partying until the wee hours, photographing beautiful rolling sculptures, attending the hotest shows around and best of all... traveling and getting paid for it!
Big thanks to the following magazines / website thus far for making my dreams come true and allowing me to not only express my passion, but also make a living from it. In no particular order:
