Gianfrancesco Leone was born in Rome in October the 12th 1961. When playing blues, rock or pop, he prefers the ten-hole diatonic harmonica, but he likes the chromatic one better when asked to do studio recordings.
In August 2007 he performs several gigs in London at the “King’s Head Theatre’s Pub” with the ‘Eric Ranzoni Trio’ and at the “Ain’t Nothing But the Blues Bar” in Soho, taking part in various blues sessions. In spring 2007 he is one of the founders of ‘Special Beat’.
In July the 13th this new italian band is on the “Pistoia Blues” festival’s stage, shortly before great performances by ‘The Fabulous Thunderbirds’, Jeff Beck, Sandra Hall and Patti Smith. Over the last twenty years of activity, he's played with some of the best blues musicians in Rome, such as Roberto Ciotti, Mario Donatone and many others. He took part in different blues festivals, like “Isola Liri Blues” in 2003, “Aventino Blues” in 1995 and in 1985. He often collaborates in creating music for theatre performances, radio and TV commercials, jingles, light music songs etc.
He draws his inspiration mainly from blues, jazz, soul and funky, but also from many great rock and pop songs of the 60s and 70s. He’s indeed fond of good quality pop music and loves great composers such as Burt Bacharach, Ennio Morricone and Henry Mancini. Regarding harmonica players, he “worships” Little Walter, Toots Thielemans, Sonny Terry, Charlie Musselwhite, Paul Butterfield and Larry Adler. He likes a lot the British Mark Feltham as well, harmonica player with ‘Nine Below Zero’. Among the Italian harmonicists, he regards Leno Landini as absolutely the best diatonic player, for both technique and originality.
