PAUL BLEY: "Practice makes imperfect and polished.. If you play the same piece over and over again, is not even listenable...." CHARLIE PARKER: "First you master your instrument, then you master the music.... then you forget about all that **** and just play!" DUKE ELLINGTON: "...the first time! Don't do a second take! After you repeat yourself three times, you will start to sound like a really bad imitation of yourself". ITALO CALVINO: “La semplicità non è il risultato di una difficoltà evitata ma il frutto di una difficoltà risolta”
Born in Venice, Italy, in 1955 he’s in the music scene since the early 70’s playing in rockbands or with his acoustic guitar (in a blues/folk John Martyn -Dick Gaughan style). A radio DJ with radio FM/AM stations, he’s considered a forerunner of the ‘turntablism’ in using phonograph-turntables to create and manipulate sounds, performing with records, mixers, live electronics and tape-loops. From 1978 he has been establishing a collaboration with poet and writer Massimo Palladino, a venture that had been permitting to achieve fine pieces for theatre and radio dramas. As musician/director/producer he had a long list of theatre, television and cinema collaborations. His first solo music release is 'Wind' published in 1986, a work that is now considered an anticipator of the Creative Commons theory. “Les Nouvelles Musiques Du Chambre” with Charles Hayward for the belgian label Sub Rosa (1989), “Wind Collector” with Alessandro Monti (1991) and Alessandro Pizzin. Then “Lontano” (2001) and “Moltitudine In Labirinto” (2003, with Giuseppe Caprioli) produced with Giovanni Antognozzi for Ants Records in Rome. Many musicians covered or sampled his music. Among the others there's Bjork (in the track 'It's In Our Hands' from her Greatest Hits album), Robert Lippok, To Rococo Rot, Luca Miti, Alessandro Pizzin. In the 2008 has been released ‘THE LAST DJ’ with Italian net-label LAVERNA. This compilation of new tracks comes after a very long time. Except for some issues of previous unreleased music and some sporadic contributions, this is the first list of Gigi Masin's new tunes after more than 10 years. A couple of years ago Masin came back to music, recording, playing in concerts after a long period of silence. This release it's a friendly homage to Mirco Salvadori (the mentor of this compilation) and all those people that had in the past, like Gigi himself, a career as radio DJ. Mostly for piano (Masin sadly lost in a flood most of his instruments, all the electronics and 30-years-long tapes archive...) these tunes are pieces of poetry, a bright return of the ..sound.. that is considered an unique point of reference and respect. For more informations, http://www.laverna.net. Now working with Mirco Salvadori and Massimo Berizzi to the 'The Infant T(h)ree' project, he's planning to release a solo cd.-
How are you? I wanted to thank you for the kind comment you left me ages ago, and apologise for the late reply. Things have been manic lately, and I've had to take a short break from MySpace. I sure am glad to be back, though! :-)
I'm so glad you like the use of wah wah on my tracks - thanks so much for listening, Gigi. God bless you. ;o)
Hope you're well, and that you're set for a wonderful week!
