... you care about the music you're promoting (it's not a breadwinner for the promoter),
... you care about the audience at your gigs (people pay good money for their tickets - welcome them, get to know them, keep them informed and they will reward you with repeat visits)
... you plan to greet the band as if they were guests at your home (feed them, care for them, treat them well and they will invariably reward you and your audience with a great show),
... you expect to pay the band well (how much do you think it costs to keep a tour on the road, especially an independent artist/label? Worthwhile guarantees - and good percentage breaks that favour the band. A 50/50 split just doesn't cut it!)
... you are prepared to battle against the self-serving apathy of the local press who couldn't give a rat's ass about your show - unless they want to get on the guest list,
Do it only for good and honourable reasons, because there are times when you're going to feel like it's a thankless task - it's at those times you will remember that Mark Eitzel (and Carl Johns) called you "the best promoters in the world", and that there are people willing to pay to attend your shows often based purely on your recommendation and at those times you will know that it's good to be damn proud of what you have achieved.

About me: UPDATE: AS OF NOVEMBER '09, WE ARE CLOSING THE DOORS OF THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN - let's see who comes along to pick up the baton in Brighton...
Forthcoming shows:
CARRIE ELKIN & DANNY SCHMIDT: NOVEMBER 26th: THE PRINCE ALBERT. Your last chance, Sinners...
For nine years, The Gilded Palace of Sin posse brought the best in Americana and alt.country to the South Coast town of Brighton. Sadly, as with all good things, an end had to come. If you ever came to a show, thank you - if you came back because you liked what we did, thank you all the more. We always endeavoured to make our nights special: gigs are potentially maigcal events, and there's an alchemical mix of factors involved. We did what we could: you brought the party -and the bands more often than not responded with vigour. Our work is done.
You can still catch the Gilded Palace Radio Show on Totally Radio if you want to hear more of these kind of sounds. Updated fortnightly the most recent show (for 1st week of November) features tracks from WILCO, LUCERO, MALCOLM HOLCOMBE and the mighty MOTHER HIPS
Advance tickets for our last show are available from:
RESIDENT RECORDS in KENSINGTON GARDENS in the North Laines, (01273) 606312
. Far be it from me to prejudge these affairs (and, truth be told, I've little recent experience) but I think this one might be busy.
You can also buy online at We Got Tickets
Who I'd like to meet: *Someone with a pot of money and correspondingly great taste in music, who could buy us a venue and keep great Americana coming to Brighton
*The knobhead at the Red Krayola ICA gig who, when asked to stop talking loudly during their set, told me to go and stand somewhere else. It's twats like you who'd have been shown the door at one of our gigs. I hope someone shows you the error of your conceited, ignorant ways - preferably with a hard, blunt instrument.
We're devastated to hear that you're closing up shop! Thank you so much for so many years of putting on wonderful gigs, and thank you for all your support. Brighton really isn't going to be the same without you.
For once, I'm totally lost for words. Those that know me well will understand that this is quite rare, but this time it's because I'm rather verklempt. Charlie, Shaun, it has been an honour to serve alongside you. D x
Brighton won't be the same without your twangy stylings. So many fantastic nights that have defined so many venues for me. You guys MADE the Hanbury! Good luck in what you do next. I raise a bourbon to you.
Really sad to hear you guys are stopping your shows. Your evenings have been amongst the best of my gigging life, and there are moments that I will literally cherish forever.
Thanks for all your hard work over the years, it really has been appreciated!
Hey, thanks for all your support! Hopefully I'll get to Brighton next time I'm across... I do love those huge pebbly beaches. for now, London is on thursday... Cheers!~
It's a sad sad thing to see GPOS shutting up shop. You will be very much missed by Brighton music lovers and bands from far and wide. Thanks for all the jolly marvellous evenings (and a fair few afternoons) you've given us over the years. xxx
The Curst Sons headline at Hove Town Hall on Nov 13 for Children In Need. They are the only Americana act on the bill but as your friends will know they never fail to deliver and at £5 on the door (£4 students) or £4 in advance you can't go wrong. They are due on around 10.15. Music lovers generally may in any event enjoy the rest of the line up which includes the one man electronoic wizzard Xanthus, and indie rockers Clayton Strange and the hotly tipped Heel Catch Fire. Keep up the good work you righteous sinners.
Thanks for that. Obviously us girls always take a bit off our age, so I'm actually 106.. Been off celebrating with one of the last ever Broken Family band gigs :(
