GINA AKERS as STYLE REPORTER for SKY NEWS & SKY NEWS ACTIVE, reporting on Liz Hurley's Wedding
GINA'S ROCK BIOG...
Gina’s earliest memory of music was being subjected to the questionable vinyl delights of The Bee Gees, The Bay City Rollers and Roxy Music – all her mums favourites, along with a weekly burst of musical education in the form of Top of the Pops
ROCK & ROLLOCKING!
Later Mummy developed some taste in music and Gina’s car journeys to and from school were synonymous with the sounds of 10CC, The Police, Kate Bush, The Jam, Ultravox, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and New Order. For Gina these sounds were so prolific that she remembers every song but to this day can’t remember the route to her primary school.
Rock was an early influence on Gina’s music taste with one of her oldest music memories being from witnessing regular spontaneous acoustic sets by Rick Parfitt (of Status Quo) at the Butchers Arms (now Riffs Bar) near Swindon. Gina recalls “I was about 5 years old the first time I saw Rick Parfitt singing and playing guitar, I was like WHO IS HE? – I want to hear more, and I remember getting seriously boll**ed for refusing to leave the pub”.
BATS!
At the time Gina also had a fixation with a pet bat (something else she regularly got told off for), little did she know that elsewhere in the world of music her interest was shared by one of the Godfathers of rock Ozzy Osbourne.
David Bowie sparked Gina’s interest from an early age via her favourite childhood film Labyrinth, and the discovery of her Dad’s original vinyl singles of ‘Life on Mars’ ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘The Man Who Sold the World’. Gina comments “David Bowie or The Goblin King as I like to call him, is madder than me! I was fascinated and estatic to find someone who was so eccentric and totally blatant about it!”.
It was at this time Gina also began collecting rock memorabilia in the form of picture disc vinyls, her collection stated with a Madness ‘Our House’ 6” picture vinyl and Queen’s ‘A Kind of Magic’ Highlander 12” picture vinyl. Bowie’s ‘Fame’ and Duran Duran’s ‘The Reflex’ soon joined the fledgling collection.
THIS IS A CALL....
It was during her teens that Gina’s music taste really began to veer straight into one direction – ROCK! Rather than revising and studying Gina spent her teenage years excessively listening to Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, U2, Echo & The Bunnymen, Kate Bush, T-Rex, The Clash, Kiss, The Doors, Joy Division, Metallica, INXS, Bon Jovi, Prince, Janes Addiction, The Stone Roses, The Happy Mondays, The La’s, Soul Asylum, Ugly Kid Joe, Blind Melon, The Counting Crows, The Lemonheads, Oasis, Supergrass, Blur, Portishead, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Levellers and The Foo Fighters (she bought This is a Call on vinyl and still has the copy!).
During this time Gina developed a preference for American bands. At aged 13 Gina started attending her first live gigs (not counting the Rick Parfitt encounters), Gina saw live performances by Boy George, Tony Hadley, 10 CC, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Blur and Midge Ure.
In her later teens Gina’s scope for music appreciation became even more diverse with a taste for old school hip hop including De La Soul and Skee Lo, she also delved deeper into the world of punk and grunge and witnessed live performances from The Stiff Little Fingers and Soul Asylum. In her later teens Gina became attuned to Pink Floyd, Green Day, The Pixies, Kula Shaker, Garbage, The Verve, Beck, Gomez, Puddle of Mud, Weezer and Wheatus, the latter of which she refers to as ‘fun rock’.
Gina sites Ocean Colour Scene’s Moseley Shoals as one of her favourite albums of all time. “There’s not a single bad song on this album, they are all as good as they possibly could be!”.
In more recent years Gina has been able to determine her favourite bands which include Incubus, The Kings of Leon, The Foo Fighters and Joy Division. Most weekends Gina can be found at some kind of gig or live music performance, she avoids large concerts and has preference for the nochalent intimancy of smaller gigs. More recently she has attended performances by The Kings of Leon, The Features, The On/Offs, The Knott, The Fratellis, Razorlight, The Arbitors, The Darkness and The Zutons. Gina can also be found witnessing tribute bands (Four Fighters are a favourite), and she is an avid supporter of up and coming bands and her local music scene.
Today Gina’s rock collection of rock memorabilia includes an array of limited edition and rare vinyls, playlist sheets from The Darkness and Zutons gigs, drumsticks from a Zutons gig and drumsticks signed by T-Rex drummer Paul Fenton. Gina is currently learning to play bass guitar and drums, and is proving to be a talented song writer, she has written around 20 songs so far which are due to be recorded in the near future.
It’s no surprise that Gina named her first cat Pixie (after a certain US band that she liked the name of!), and today she has a koi carp called Sidney (Vicious) and a Siamese cat called Elvis – well what else would you expect from a girl that had a pet bat!.
