What Louis Armstrong was for Basin Street blues and Ravi Shankar is for India's ragas, Giora Feidman has become for the mystical melodies of the migrant Jews, which he performs in concert halls from New York's Carnegie and London's Royal Albert to Tokyo's Bunka-Kaikan.
Klezmer, meaning literally "instrument of song", is the term applied to musicians, beginning with King David, the Psalmist, who play for festivities in the Jewish communities spread across the wordl. The true klezmer, according to Feidman is "a folklorist, representing a society that has survived for 5700 years. I use the clarinet to express myself, to transfer to other my inner voice", Feidman explains. "A nigun is more than a melody; it is truly universal means of communication. It is the language of the soul. In Judaism a rabbi will never ask a klezmer to "play" a nigun. He will ask him to "say" a nigun. To "say" melody is to speak the truth."
