About me:
I am an author, critic, and independent scholar living in Long Island City, Queens, New York, with Rob, my domestic partner.
In 2006 I published my first book, "An Offer We Can't Refuse: The Mafia in the Mind of America" (Faber & Faber; Farrar, Straus, Giroux; paperback, 2007). The book explores America's long-running fascination with "The Mafia Myth," i.e., narratives of Italian and Italian American crime, from the silent film era to The Sopranos.
In 2008, I spoke at a few conferences, including the Pop Conference at EMP|SFM, Shake, Rattle: Music, Conflict, and Change, April 10-13, Seattle. I gave an audiovisual presentation called "21st Century WOPS: Raiz, Roy Paci, and the Cultural Politics of Migration." The presentation included video clips of these two cutting-edge southern Italian artists.
In May I gave a paper at "The Sopranos: A Wake," an international conference about the departed (and missed!) HBO series. Scholars and writers from the US, Italy Europe and the UK presented on a wide (and wild) range of topics related to the show. My talk, about gay gangster Vito Spatafore and the "queering" of the Mafia genre, was well-attended and very well received.
I now have a blog called "Minestrone" at the great new journalism website www.I-Italy.org. Check it out! I also write music criticism for Rootsworld.com
