Leo Dale and Girish Makwana first played together in June 2007 when Leo booked Girish’s Nth Indian classical duo to play at the first Quiet Music Festival. Now with Girish playing tablas and Leo playing alto and soprano saxes and alto flute, their infectious groove and extra sensory communication is drawing audiences near. They have a firm belief that there is no such thing as “meditation music” but rather that music IS meditation. Does this mean wafty synth pads to float off on and no funk? Hell NO! Their music runs the full dynamic spectrum that takes you through the tempest into the eye of the storm and out the other side again. These two musicians are great believers in: warmth of tone, the importance of melody, music as conversation and the importance of building rapport with the audience through story telling.
Jazz - Indian ? ?
Jazz and Indian Classical musics have many similarities and so there is an immediate opportunity for discourse between them. These two styles also have much to offer each other in their approach to melody, rhythm, inflection, improvisational development and tonality. Leo and Girish are fascinated by this translation of and conversation between musical cultures. Together they aim to increase awareness of this artistic flashpoint.
Australia is currently receiving more immigration from India than any other country. In Melbourne, Leo and Girish’s home town, there are currently more immigrants from India than Greece. Music speaks across these international boundaries, cultures and languages. The bringing together of these 2 highly compatible but diverse artforms , Jazz and Indian Classical, will help to stimulate that cultural conversation providing the ability to attract a broad audience from across the spectrum.
Girish Makwana and Leo Dale's Friend Space (Top 24)
Thanks so much for the friend request. Very amazing sound! The alto flute sounds stunningly close to the Bansuri. It's wonderful to listen to both of you. All best wishes for your musical journey - Amaresh
