Me..... AND my SWEET 16 Series, 14 Fret Cutaway custom Martin acoustic electric guitar, Yamaha keyboard, ROLAND FP electric piano, Fender Stratocaster electric guitar (for the occasional need to jam), cool, carved Djembe drum (when pounding something inanimate becomes a therapeutic necessity), Boss Loop Station (for KT Tunstall moments), a DigiTech Vocalist 4 (for live harmony or instances where I might need to sound like a chipmunk), my Tascam 4 track Portastudio5, and my Tascam 2488 24 track digital studio without which, none of this would be possible! C'est tout....
Influences
My mother....after that in no particular order, it would be Missy Higgins, Bryan Fenkart, Imogen Heap, Joni Mitchell, Joshua Radin, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Emmylou Harris, Carole King, Linda Rondstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss, Sheryl Crow, Simon and Garfunkel, Shawn Colvin, Lucy Kaplansky, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Colin Hay, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, The Beatles, Sara MacLachlan, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Heart, Nancy Griffith, Schuyler Fisk, Cary Brothers, Peter, Paul, and Mary, The Kingston Trio, KT Tunstall, Kathleen Edwards, Laura Powers, Cat Stevens, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Every musician from the Baroque era, Nickel Creek, Artists drawn to the Hotel Cafe Tours, Enya, Dan Fogelberg, Queen, Gregorian Chant, Renaissance music, and a million others that would take up far too much space....
At present, Girl Friday is just a one man band...me. :-) If not for multi-track recording, I would likely resemble one of those musical contraptions from a Dr. Seuss book and need about six more hands! Alas! My kingdom for a band!! Until then, GF plays all instruments on the demos....
The Girl Friday moniker is playfully based on Defoe's loyal and competent Man Friday as a comparison with my own busy and somewhat servant life; That and the fact that I was the only female playing at a particular venue on Fridays in my first foray back into the music industry after an extended hiatus!
Segueing from teaching in the elementary classroom to the fitness and dance studio, "Girl Friday" is currently enjoying writing original compositions, recording demos in her home studio, and performing live wherever she can! :-)
Light of the Moon, the first professionally recorded Girl Friday EP, produced by Dan Workman and recorded at Sugar Hill Studios, will be available on CD Baby, iTunes, and on the MySpace SnoCap store! Other tunes posted here and many more posted on the SoundClick Widget are demos awaiting their chance at professional recording!
The first video posted below is a GF original, "Carry Me Away" giving a sneak peek inside the GF home studio. The second is a cover of Wake Me Before I Die, written by singer/ songwriter and dear friend, Bryan Fenkart. It's the first video I ever shot with my trusty little Flip Cam, a fun little toy.
