Hey there folks! Thought i'd create to homage to all those great, lost and obscure girl garage greats, GGG for short! Each week, or every so often I will post a new record to showcase the talents of those 60's chicks and provide a bit 'o background for each! So stay tuned and keep your ears peeled...
Gunilla Thorn - Jealous Woman
Man, what a track!, and what a gal! What was Joe Meek thinking when Gunilla given the right material could perform to this effect??? I ask! As noted by one commentator, Gunilla's markedly provoctive image and raw voice was in stark contrast to many of the contempoary performers in 1964, both within and beyond her native Scandavia. After her work with Joe Meek and The Tornadoes in England, Gunilla released a cover of Johnny Cash's Walk the Line in 1965 with Danish group The Defenders, and then this single in 1966 with another Danish group, The Beethovens. During the next two years she toured Switzerland, England, Bermuda, Germany and the Netherlands. Then from 1967-68 she went over to Vietnam entertain the American troups, performing under the name Nilla. After a brief partnership with Sonny Guerrero of folkgroup The Immigrants, Gunilla left the music biz in the 70's.
The Fabulous Fabs - Fabulous
British gal band The Fabs somehow ended up releasing an LP in Mexico in the late sixties! The story that must go behind that must be a hoot! But yes the group consisted of Sarah Johnstone on guitar and organ (plus writing duties on occasion!), Maria Kaye on guitar, Margaret Lewis on bass and Lynne Barry on drums. The record includes mostly covers of popular songs of the time, including Bread and Butter! Plus two originals, "Fabulous" being one of them. What a great theme tune for the band to have!
The Clinger Sisters - Bread and Butter
At some point between their very first records as pre-teens and their later incarnation as all-femme-band, The Clinger siblings were signed to the Jo-Bee record label, or perhaps (and is probably the case) the label was in fact set up for solely for them by mormon preacher Lynn Bryson and their pap. Two records resulted, Bread and Butter with the flip Children Laughing being such one of these babies! Bryson also co-wrote the Children Laughing, and is quite the interesting character as a quick google will atest to!
Le Mini Coopers
This talented four piece female band from the Correggio region in Italy were discovered in 1966 by Marcello Minerbi of Mercellos Ferial. During their career they released only two singles, the fab "Mi Abituero" and "Ma Ti Abbiamo Vista Piangere", both of which were released as double a-sides with other artists on the flip. After a relocation to London no less to tour with Italio pop star Dante/Peppino Principe for four months they returned to Italy where they eventually split.
Les Intrigantes - Le Seuil Du Soleil
Quebec's finest female foursome return with a cover of Simon and Garfunky's 'Sound of Silence' - 'tis a beaut! Will someone bring a out a comp of their material I ask!
Bunches 'A Good - See the Farmer
Fantastic psychy-goodness from this mystery group apparently headed by fiery red-haired vixen! Released on Mod records in 1968, it made some dents in regional top 40's. Also featured on a new Soft Sounds for Gentle People comp, along with a few other artists I have previously featured in the past....coincidence?????
