Grammy winner Charles Goodan pairs Nick Weber's sly, easy vocals with textured, unusual and exotic production. These tunes boast some rarely coexisting qualities, disarming yet hip. “Girl Problems”, the latest single, echoes new wave, Morris Day, Chris Butler’s work with The Waitresses and even Gaucho-era Steely Dan. Goodan laces blues piano, stinging guitar, and muted horns over his slinky beat; it’s cinematic, colorful, and weirdly winning.
Weber’s wry storytelling is the core of the songs. He’s got his complaint, sure, but he keeps it in perspective: if men invariably have girl problems, they’ve got to accept their fair share of the blame for them. “I’ve got two sisters and I want them to be happy”, he confesses, “so I wouldn’t want them to end up with guys like me”.
Always danceable, the record is rife with virtuoso performances from the likes of violinist Lilly Hayden, percussionist Mauro Refosco (currently on tour with David Byrne), Charles Pappert on sax, guitarist Jan Ozveren (toured with Corinne Bailey Rae), drummer Bill Dobbrow (toured with the Black Crows)
Charles Goodan, the architect of the songs, has worked as a producer with the Dust Brothers, Beck, the Stones, Carlos Santana, and scored the movie 'Fight Club'. He plays everything, from keys, to guitar, to bass, to french horn – even been known to break out the ukulele from time to time. the tunes are unusual, with eclectic choices, such as incorporating voicemail messages, webster definitions. Most importantly, Girl Problems is mischievous. Every song surprises, and flummoxes one's expectations.

"DJ Monkey …soul-stirring, excitingly edgy music…just disturbing (read ‘mind-f**king’) enough to demand attention. There is a whole spice rack of auditory flavors here, served up like fractured poetry on a collection of intensely listenable Hallmark cards from Hell." Bill Margold, Cinema Seen, L.A.
