About me: GIRLS IN THE NOSE, founded in 1987 by Kay Turner and Gretchen Phillips (Two Nice Girls, Gretchen Phillips Experience), is a band of six Austin-based women whose electric guitar guts and lacerating lyrics aim to please and provoke diverse audiences. Girls in the Nose (GITN) is a band for girls in the know; our philosophy loosely translates as Viva La Vulva or Feminism for the Fearless. The band played locally in Austin clubs such as Chances, Liberty Lunch, Hole in the Wall, and the Texas Tavern as well as venues in San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Louisville, Madison, Northampton, Cleveland, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Seattle, Portland, Little Rock and other cities across the United States. Everywhere we go the band gains a frenzied following of strangers and lovers, women and men, gay and straight. GITN was a major hit at music festivals such as Rhythmfest, Northampton Lesbian Festival, Lone Star Women's Music Festival and the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival as well as the March on Washington in 1993. Girls in the Nose has been described as "the B-52's meets Iggy Pop singing about lesbian-feminism."
