Grl is an all-girls' singing group consisting of Jasmin (20) and TreLisa (19). The group began seven years ago, not long after these two bffs met. "It was in October and I remember the weather was horrible that night, yet we were still talking on the phone," TreLisa recalls. "We had printed out the lyrics to 3LW's 'No More (Baby Ima Do Right)' and we were singing. Then Jasmin said out loud what I was thinking." The girls claim that things were hard at first, especially with telling people their dreams. "I had always told people that I wanted to be an actress and so I knew the reaction with telling them this wouldn't be much different," says TreLisa. Yet, they pressed forward and went after their dream of owning the stage. So why has it been seven years and the world is just now hearing about Grl? TreLisa thinks it may be because, "We thought that we were serious, we thought we were dedicated and driven, and we may have been, but we were really naive. We didn't want help from anyone and it was supposed to happen overnight in our eyes." Without knowing, Jasmin and TreLisa started to mature and become more aware of all the hard work that went into this thing. "We never thought about the fact that we needed songs, that we needed lessons, that we needed... EVERYTHING!," reveals Jasmin. But, also with maturing came graduating middle school and moving on to high school... different high schools. With the seperation came new friends, new plans, and new hobbies. By the time they'd reached their sophomore years, they both ended up leaving Grl hanging in mid-air believing that the other was ready to call it quits. But were they? In late 2005, when they were both starting their second half of their junior year, Jasmin decided to transfer to TreLisa's high school. "It happened so fast! We immediately went from thinking about boys and such, to solely focusing Grl," says TreLisa. Jasmin adds, "We were writing songs and basically getting prepared to do a demo package to send to Michele Williams [3LW's manager] to take her up on her offer. But of course...". They were still in high school! Trying to avoid the "high school attitude and outlook" was a hard thing to do. So eventually, they slowly and unknowingly let Grl die out again. August, 2005- They started their senior year. May, 2006- They graduated high school. August, 2006- They started college. September, 2006- Grl arose from it's grave in "Forgotten Groups Heaven"! "It was kind of like the first time that we started the group. This time, though, I said what had been on Jasmin's mind," says TreLisa. It was as though nothing had changed except... EVERYTHING! They had a new flavor of songs to write, a new attitude, a new drive, a new ambition, and once again, a new start. "This was it and we knew it!", exclaims Jasmin. Grl has been searching for a third member for their singing group for nearly 7 years. "We went through many different third members," Jasmin states. "No one seemed to complete the equation and so we would search again and again until finally realizing that we may not be able to find one." But, if there' s one thing we have learned about Grl, it's that they don't mind starting over again. "We'll probably try it one last time and see what happens. If we can't find anyone, then that's just how it's meant to be and there's nothing we can do about what's meant to be," TreLisa says. Grl is pronounced "girl". How simple is that? "Yeah right! We went through more names than third members!", Jasmin laughs. And she's right! The list goes on and on: Tommaj, G3, Fanta-C, Essence, and when they became desperate they settled for Hazel which was their skin tones combined. "When we came up with Grl, it felt like a Duh! Moment," she says. So, why take out the "i"? TreLisa explains, "Well, a lot of people think that it's because we want to have three members or that each letter stands for something. Really though, the "i" is not there because we say that there is no "i" in Grl... not the group at least. We look at it as a team and everything we do is a team effort. If I do something, then I do it for Grl. If Jasmin does something then she does it for Grl. There's no "i" at all."
