Tori Amos/Fiona Apple with a jam band/rock influence
Kari Marie has been playing piano since her early years, and singing for nearly as long as she remembers. Only until her college years did she discover that she could create vocal lines to accompany the tunes she was creating at the piano. Since then, there was no looking back. She is very heavily influenced by the female pianists of our time---Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, even Lorie Line---drawing inspiration from their works and success. As of most recently, she has begun to explore incorporating styles and rhythms from genres that have been atypical to the piano player, finding wonderful energy from such bands as Led Zeppelin, Umphrey's McGee, Tool, John Butler Trio, and Bjork.
Recent collaborations with Minneapolis musicians include the sensational "Stop Making Sense" show as originally performed by the Talking Heads, presented by God Johnson, which debuted November of 2007 at Trocadero's, and was "brought home" to the Cabooze on Valentine's Day of 2008. Members of the Big Wu and local Fargo band WBPN contributed to the musical success and integrity of the show. Selections from "Stop Making Sense" show are often reprised during God Johnson shows, and Kris Myers of local Chicago band Umphrey's McGee sat in with the SMS/GJ crew one evening to lend his rhythmical talent. Kari has also teamed up with God Johnson and saxophonist Kevin Sinclair on a few covers. More extensive group jams have included the Histronic plus Jake Cinninger from Umphrey's McGee (on drums) as well as the Willie Waldman Project featuring Tony Austin and members of Down Lo and WBPN.
Kari's most recent musical endeavors have been away from the stage. On May 3, 2009, she will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Concordia College (Moorhead, MN)
"Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin.....featuring Kari Marie (piano, vocals), Aaron Dizon (bass), and Jason Fladager (guitar) and Royce Rock (drums) of God Johnson. Live from the Cabooze in Minneapolis 3/7/07
