what? the folk! & Solid Earth present: Freaks, Ghouls and Graves, a Balkan (ish) flavoured Halloween (ish) knees up at the delightful St Margaret’s church in Whalley Range.
Yessum we’re back. after the monstrous success of Jackson’s Boat, we thought it only right and proper to offer you another helping of profoundly good music in a great venue. We’ve got a rosette for best zombie in show, beer and food from the nice folks at Jam Street and noise from Stumblefunk.
Another co-promo with the brains and muscle that brought Beats, Roots & Leaves back in May - this time tho we de-camp indoors to make the most of the Halloween theme inside a church, with face painters, ghost hunters, a bar provided by Jam Street and a fabulous line-up of musical tricker treats:
Na Zdrove Na Zdrove is Sheffield's finest Balkan Beats, Gypsy Brass, Russian Ska, Gypsy Dub, Klezmer and Gypsy Punk night. blimey. We’ll ave some of that. We’ll be welcoming their house band and resident DJs - yes indeedy! http://www. myspace. com/nazdrove

DOORS 9PM ::: £8 donation (all proceeds go to MSF in Darfur) ::: BAR PROVIDED BY JAM STREET CAFE SERVING CASK ALES AND VINTAGE CIDER, BOTTLED BEER, SPIRITS AND HALLOWEEN SNACKS - 2AM LICENCE
On Wednesday May 14th we return to The Deaf Institute for an evening of lyrical, alternative and contemporary folk music and visual ambiance, in a modern modern setting, with pews, below a glass roof...........with Anna Kashfi, Dan Haywood's New Hawks and At Swim Two Birds who will feature a video projection of 'The London Nobody Knows'.
"The London Nobody Knows, a 1967 documentary stroll around the city with James Mason. No horseguards, no palaces, but Islington's Chapel Market, pie shops, and Spitalfields tenements. Carnaby chicks and chaps, the 1967 we have been led to remember, are shockingly juxtaposed with feral meths drinkers, filthy shoeless kids, squalid Victoriana. Camden Town still resembles the world of Walter Sickert. There is romance and adventure, but mostly there is malnourishment. London looks like a shithole".
Solid Earth and what? the folk present: beats, roots and leaves, an eight hour charity session of musical goodness at Manchester’s best pub in nearly the countryside: Jackson’s Boat in Sale Water Park. All proceeds to MSF in Darfur.
It’s May, the perfect month for a doo in a marquee surrounded by trees. If it rains, don’t fret, we’ll be inside instead. Jackson’s Boat will be serving proper ales and food so make an evening of it, bring some warm clothes now.
what? the folk! gets under way at Odd Bar in the northern quarter on sunday 11th May then each first sunday of the month thereafter. From 8pm, Entry is FREE so get there early. jambone x
hi everyone, here's our line up for the next month at the deaf institute... and i can assure you every night is full of bloody great bands and the best leftfield dj's! we're totally happy for any of our friends to get as many people as they like on the £3.00 guestlist every week so tell your friends and keep'em coming. if you haven't been yet the venue itself is wprth popping your head in.. truly beautiful! we can also sort anyone out with free entry if you can help us do a little promo about the nights. it's tricky being based in london and trying to do a weekly up north so if anyone wants to get involved getting this amazing night off the ground and spreading the word about exceptional new bands then just give us a shout.. hope to see y'all soon.. x
what? the folk! returns to the city centre in the brand new evirons of the deaf institute. running monthly and serving up fine fresh & folkly filth under whatever banner you wish to label it.

they've decided our nights at dulcimer are the perfect place to conduct their interviews and photo shoots so it'd be nice if you can all join us and confirm their suspicion that there really is something to write home about...
the malodies of bellafontaine, john stammers, nancy elizabeth and neil burrell all play live from 8 o'clock with the usual redbricks dj's playing allsorts of eclectic folk/psych rarities..

When THE SNARLS arrive on stage there is a definite buzz about the room, which suddenly feels busy and filled with excitement. They cut a pretty cool image under the lights of Academy 3, all mop-tops and shades, with clothes hanging off their wiry frames like a bunch of cat-walk scarecrows. The music is instantly likeable party music: straightforward bluesy rock n roll, but done in such a way that just makes you want to smile and dance, which everybody is doing very quickly. They are perhaps a bit like Primal Scream sounding like The Rolling Stones, but in a more stylistic sense, as oppose to the Primals’ shoplifting of Exile On Main St era Stones arrangements for their occasional ‘return to rock’ albums. It seems The Snarls have really grown into their new skin after abandoning their former incarnation as The Fremen. The show is still seeped in retro appeal but as performers they are so full of energy, and it is clear that singer Mark Range was born to be on stage. Striking angular, Jaggeresque poses and gyrating around the microphone, Range looks as if he could have been doing this for ten years or more. Crusty looking dreadlocked men, NME fashionistas and girly teenie boppers dance together all around, a credit to The Snarls all-pervasive appeal. I’m not surprised to hear the calls for more as they crash off stage, but before we know it the lights are on and its all over. reveiw www.manchestermusic.co.uk

folks! final installment of this seasons what? the folk! is almost upon us as we break up our regular happenings in favour of a 3 month break spent trawling our grass stained bums from festival to festival, but we may surprise ya'll with one or two choice specials in between??? keep your eyes n' ears fixed.
until then you are invited to join us in a good old send off next Sunday (may 27th) as the bank holiday looms and the anticipation of another day off work unfolds before your very eyes and ears...
