Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Patti Labelle, and others.
Dr. E and Fleshcoat give adults their soul. By Camille Yvette Welsch, for the Centre Daily Times
•In August, Atlanta hosted the first annual Soul Music Summit, an attempt to bring artists of neo-soul together to make connections, make music and make history. The summit also tried to discover artists to bolster the scant number of soul musicians in the mainstream, such as Angie Stone, Jill Scott and India.Arie. Indeed, lovers of soul have to look hard to find acts bands worthy of the soul title.
•Thankfully, Dr. E Featuring Fleshcoat, a band fronted by Ohio State full professor of English and applied linguistics Elaine Richardson, has taken up the torch, paying homage to legends such as Patti Labelle and Donny Hathaway while keeping pace with newer artists.
•A cross between Chaka Khan and Scott, Dr. E Featuring Fleshcoat is all about "grown folks' music," tunes for adults that's light on violence, candy-coated lyrics and overt sexuality, and heavy on slow grooves for late-night dancing and funk for long drives with the windows down.
•Gifted with a voice that bends to a throaty, womanly purr or high, Erykah Badu-like top notes, Dr. E leads the band through songs that praise God, children and love.
•In "Back to Work," Dr. E penned an anthem for the everywoman who just wants to stay home and enjoy a little more time with her man, her family, her real life. The chorus sticks in the head and encourages chair dancing and singing along. The choruses generally fall within the vocal range of the average person, making them perfect songs to sing along to. After three listens to the album, you'll have the whole thing on the brain.
•"Losin' It" sounds like a lost Chaka Khan track, and "I See Heaven" returns listeners to funk with a sexy bass line and a smoky delivery by Dr. E, truly "grown folks music" as track two claims.
•Dr. E answers what some might call a niche market of music for adults without being easy listening. For adults who still have some swing to their hips and a desire for smart, sexy tunes, here's a match. Almost every song on the album is catchy and funky with lyrics that most people can relate to, whether it is wanting to avoid work or praise God.
Sounds Like
Some people say I sound like Erykah Badu. Some say Stephanie Mills. I have little hints of Patii Labelle. She is my favorite singer. Her heart is so big and she gives it all to us everytime she opens her mouth. I love Chaka Khan. I love Fantasia. I just got hip to D'Atra Hicks and Ledisi, and I love them, too. Jill Scott. I mean, I love so many female artists and I listen to all of them. So, I feel blessed if my name gets mentioned in the same sentence as any of them.
Dr. E is an upcoming artist from Cleveland, Ohio. She is a singer- song writer and a professor at Ohio State University. She's had some of her songs played on "All My Children" and "The Young And The Restless" among others. Her goal is to have her music placed in major motion pictures and on stars such as Beyonce, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Patti Labelle, and other singers that she loves. Dr. E works with some of Cleveland's best musicians and enjoys writing songs and performing live. Dr. E's band Fleshcoat backs her at performances.
Dr. E is all about growth, as an R&B singer songwriter, artist, actress and woman. Her growth is apparent in her second indie release, “Real Life” on “Give Us Free” Records. She wanted her record to reflect the live music, vocal versatility, and positive energy of her live performances.
Dr. E laces the singles “Good Girl Down” and “Elevated” with a gospel soul-filled approach that demands attention. Both songs are uplifting and upbeat grooves about the power of women to achieve their dreams. Listeners will be moved by Dr. E’s blues on “Let Me Clear My Throat”. The full length CD “Real Life” will be released early 2010. Until then, give your soul a taste of Dr. E’s new flavor!
