Jake One Programming a beat using samples by G Koop
There's a buzz on the streets, and it's all coming from the name G Koop. Hailing from Boston, and residing in Oakland, G Koop is a producer/musician that molds classic sounds with live instrumentation. His music is forward looking, while embracing the sounds of the past; combining styles into a sound that is only his own.
During his time at the renowned Berklee School of Music (Boston), Koop was seasoned with the experience of playing with some of the best players in the world. "It was like everywhere you went, it was a jam session, and the music was like nothing you had ever heard! I learned quick that I had to be able to play every instrument." It was around this this time that Koop helped form Boston's legendary HSP Crew. "Fiber, Steak Haus, Edan, 128 Colombia St. Projects, III Kings, and Thieves all rolled in the crew, and the music was killing."
Fast forward to 2002, and G Koop found himself in the Bay Area, playing along side some of the Bay's greatest jazz musicians, Including the great Donald "Duck" Bailey. "Duck is a legend. He played with Jimmy Smith, Coltrane, Sarah Vaughn, you name it! He taught us so much! Most of all that there is a legacy behind what we do, and we are professionals."
Soon production and the studio became the focus of Koop's work. He put together a facility with all of the classic instruments of the last 40 years. "That's where I get my sound. real pianos, Rhodes, clavinet, prophet 5, old fender guitars and amps; these are the things that a plug-in just can't recreate. People are always asking me, "What's that sample?" I just tell them, I played all those sounds myself!" In fact Koop is known for doing sample replays for other producers. "9 times out of 10 people say it sounds just like the original."
Koop's production is quickly gaining him recognition among those in the know. "I try to keep my sound evolving. There's a lot of amazing cats out there that I have to compete with and fuel what I'm doing. "
The future is looking bright for G Koop. "Even though time has shown that there's gonna be a lot of ups and downs in this industry, I try to rest easy knowing that no matter what, I'm just gonna keep doing what I'm doing!"
