Who I'd like to meet:

you!

At some point this week (hopefully tomorrow), GFN member Pam will be appearing on GMTV's Scottish bulletin throughout the morning (6am-9am) discussing the recent spate of sexual violence in Glasgow, the recent murders, and the vigil we are holding on Friday (see below).

Pornography Learning Space
Thursday 12th June, 6-8pm. Woodside Halls, near St George's Cross underground. (See map here: http://...com/68bov4)

What is pornography? Is it always sexist, or can it be empowering? Could it ever be feminist?
Sandie and Eileen from Rape Crisis Scotland have kindly volunteered to help us find answers to our questions. This slide show will show the realities of pornography - some explicit images and text will be used. Women only event.

Vigil for women killed in Glasgow.
Friday 13th June, 6pm. George Square.

This will be a peaceful vigil with singing, flowers and candles. It will be a time to grieve for the women we've lost - but also a time to stand up, be counted, and let everyone know... we won't stand for this anymore. Violence against women must stop, and until our society changes, more women will die needlessly at the hands of men everyday.
We must let the city know that the women of this city are not and will not be victims. We invite men to attend this vigil and be bold about their refusal to participate in a culture then denigrates, objectifies and, ultimitately, kills women.

The date of the next Glasgow Feminist Network organising meeting will be coming soon...

Events feminists should go to, organised by others

Monday 16th - Sunday 22nd June is Refugee Week. There are a whole host of events on, which you can find information on here: http://www.refugeeweek.org.uk/InYourArea/Scotland/ The issues of asylum and refugees are not widely understood, and it is all of our responsibility to ignore the lies of the right wing press and find out the facts for ourselves - please look through the whole events guide and check out as much as you can!

Events of particular interest to feminists...

Women in Refuge (Robin's Fund)
Tuesday 17 & Thursday 19 June, 6pm - 8.30pm. The Annexe, Stewartville Street, Partick.

What does 'refuge' mean to women in Glasgow? Through these workshops, participants will explore this question by directing actors in scenarios inspired by photography and personal testimony.
For more info phone 07834 321942 or email robinsfund@peacemail.com

Stand Out, Stand Up to Discrimination
Wednesday 18 June, 7pm - 9pm. LGBT Centre, 84 Bell Street.

An interactive evening hosted by young LGBT people who are seeking asylum. Come and meet new friends and find out more about human rights issues.

Anyone up for some protesting? Mike Tyson, the covicted rapist is hosting a sportsmen's dinner at the Glasgow Hilton on the 31st of May. The Glasgow Rape Crisis centre asked the Hilton their view of this and opted for the 'does not reflect the opinion of the hotel' comment.
Cop out! Any thoughts?
