  • Bio

If Glastonbury Festival is renowned for the brilliance and diversity of its artistes, then the Poetry and Words tent lived up to the reputation. - Dennis Just Dennis, Poetry&Words Review 2007 ...................... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
  • Members

The Poetry&Words tent was set up by Pat V.T. West in 1992 in a small yurt in a far flung corner of the Craft Field. It eventually moved to a new home in the Green Futures Field, where it remained, under her guiding hand until her retirement in 2008. Almost 20 years at the festival has seen Poetry&Words host hundreds of poets from far and wide. We have had the fortune to count amongst our performers many internationally renowned superstars of the poetry world, including: 'Shadow Poet Laureate', Adrian Mitchell; award winning poet, Patience Agbabi; poet, critic, author and reviewer, Peter Finch; Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy OBE CBE; and champion glasses wearer and lyrical wit, John Hegley; as well as an impromptu performance by Billy Bragg in 2004. In 2008, Helen Gregory took over the running of Poetry&Words in the Theatre and Circus area at Glastonbury. Sadly, Pat didn't make it to see her first year as curator of Poetry&Words, dying from cancer just 2 weeks before the festival. We hope, though, that she would have been proud of what we have managed to achieve for Poetry&Words. The Poetry&Words crew for 2011 are: Helen Gregory, Pete Hunter, Jane Yarham, Paul Vallis, Jack Bird and David Brookes.
  • Influences

The Poetry&Words Slam: The poetry slam was first held in 1994, hosted by Austin-based Aussie, Thom the World poet. The event was a huge success, attracting an audience which far exceeded the tent's capacity. It inspired similar events in Bristol, Cheltenham and beyond, and played a prominent role in the development of poetry slam in the U.K.. The poetry slam continues to be one of the most popular events at Poetry&Words, providing a platform in which new voices can perform alongside old hands and ensuring that the audience comes back year after year to see what the poetry has to offer them. See the list below for past P&W slam winners. We are looking to complete the gaps in this, so please e-mail us if you have any information on the winners from 1995 to 2001. A Poem for the Royal Wedding

The trucks and trains are full of freight
    and shipping shit by hundred-weight
the punters pluck ‘em by the crate
    the princely printed royal plate
    commemorates the royal date
the state is in a royal state
the biggest draw in London Town
    is evidently wedding gown

    The peasants placards don’t placate
    their poverty but demonstrate
    a roaring royal interest rate
    inflatables outside the gate
    of loyal royal real estate
    where kissing cousins pro-create
    pass round the royal hand-me-down
    it’s evidently William’s crown

    Bahrain, Brunei, Brazil, Kuwait
for hungry hoards of heads of state
    the splendid royal spreads await
    and cumberbunded guts inflate
while Tony and his running mate
    for cancellations lie in wait
no chairs – who cares – for Blair and Brown
    they’d evidently booked their clown

So smegging Clegg: crossed eyes, red nose
    but blue beneath his underclothes
    in harlequin and stripey hose
is there through who his daddy knows
    while Dave’s in gladioli pose
    he’s miserable and heaven knows
that Morrissey would wear a frown
the Queen’s not dead, just lying down

    A windswept candle burning straight
could not ignite a class debate
    what fucking unemployment rate?
    Let’s mutually masticate
    on Iceland buffets, ‘overweight’
    does not equate, can’t compensate
    for royal minted royal pounds
    royally shat on royal grounds

Thank god for saving Wills and Kate
thank Johnny Clarke for this template*
    but just before they conjugate
and tie champagne to license plate
    where Blunt and Fogle congregate
Westminster skies please turn to slate
Let’s pray it royally pisses down
    eminently, let it drown

Sadly, being pretty busy with poetry & music stuff in the Green Futures field, the only time I got along to the P&W area there was no-one about. Hope you had a great time, anyway!
