-The GLBSU Organization

The UCF Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Student Union (GLBSU), is a fellowship of students who share the common bond of interest in GLBT concerns. GLBSU was established in 1976 as the Florida Technological University Gay Student Association. In its charter, the Association listed among its original purposes, the ideas of instilling in GLBT people a sense of pride and self worth as well as promoting a better understanding between GLBT and non-GLBT communities.

As part of the University of Central Florida, GLBSU strives to eliminate homophobia on campus and in the community and mend the detrimental effects of hate, ignorance, and intolerance towards gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

Recognizing an obligation to educate, advocate, support, and serve, GLBSU provides GLBT students with opportunities to join together to learn, volunteer, take action, and enhance their own lives while attending UCF. By way of discussion groups, guest speakers, special events, and various social activities, GLBSU serves as a respite from a non-inclusive culture. Accordingly, the efforts of GLBSU continue to prevent misinformation and bridge the gap between cultures.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the planning and production of Diva Invasion 2007! Our event was name 2007/2008 UCF Event of the Year! The e-board would like to thank everyone who made it out to Diva this year, as well as all of our weekly meetings, socials, and other events like the GAYla. Without your committment and support, none of this would have been possible. Please continue showing support for your GLBT community here at UCF and the surrounding area. I will truly miss all the fun I had at the meetings and serving as your president. This was definitely one of the most fulfilling times in my life. You all have my e-mail so please keep in touch. And thanks again and CONGRTULATIONS GLBSU!

Hi!

Thank you all for all your hard work. We have been doing great these past two months.

Some of you are new so thank you for signing up.

We are now at the middle of the semester and we need to keep going strong as our numbers grow.

There are many events that will be held every week until the end of the semester, and since there are so many of you signing up at once, we are holding a TRAINING SESSION for those of you who have yet to meet with me. If you feel well versed and secure about the issue at hand, you are still more than welcome to join in and add to our discussion.

There'll be a brief but detailed presentation about who Students 4 Fairness is, what we are fighting for, what we want to see as UCF changes throughout the next few months, and how you can help.

Come with your questions and lets get them answered! At the end of the meeting there will be several events that you can sign up for.

TRAINING INFO

WHO: STUDENTS 4 FAIRNESS

This Friday, the 8th, there will be a pot-luck dinner at my apt. Make sure to bring a dish, soda (if you want something to drink besides water) and at least 5 dollars donation*. The donations will help fund people who want to go to FCPC but cannot be covered by SGA. SGA will only fund 16 people instead of 25 so we had to put a lot of people on the waiting list.

The dinner will start at 6pm on friday night. If you are familiar with Pegasus Pointe, the building number is 19 and the apt letter is F. If not, the address is 11715 College Park Trail Orlando, FL 32826. There will be fliers with maps available at the GLBSU table on Tuesday and Wednesday and at the Tuesday General Meeting.

*If you can bring paper plates and cups, please do so, but it isnt a must.

Our view: Say no to bigotry

Florida's proposed same-sex marriage ban threatens everyone's protections

When misguided religious and political groups attempt to deny gays legal rights under the guise of protecting marriage, you better watch out for your own rights.

That's what is happening in Florida, as supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage try to get the issue on the November 2008 ballot.

Here's what the proposed amendment says:

"Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized."

Here's why -- behind the legalese -- the amendment is dangerous and immoral, and should be rejected by voters.

• It would write discrimination into the Florida Constitution, stripping gays of protections solely because of whom they choose to love or live with.

That's wrong, and makes it unconscionable that U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon, R-Indialantic, and state Rep. Ralph Poppell, R-Vero Beach, have endorsed the amendment, according to the Web site of Orlando-based Florida4Marriage.org. which is pushing the issue.

The amendment is also supported by Gov. Charlie Crist, the Florida Republican Party, Florida Baptist Convention, Florida Catholic Conference and fundamentalist Christian groups.

• It's unneeded, because same-sex marriage is already illegal in Florida, as it is in most states.

Supporters of the amendment say constitutional bans are necessary because anti-gay marriage laws can be reversed.

Or struck down by judges, as happened in one Iowa court in August.

But a Maryland court Tuesday upheld that state's law banning same-sex marriage.

That give and take shows that legislatures are exactly where the issue belongs.

And where it should continue to be debated as society strives to make America's gr
