Heckman-3 biggest vocal influences come from Dolores O'Riordan(The Cranberries), Lou Rhodes(Lamb) and Elizabeth Fraser(Cocteau Twins). Other major influences come from Imogen Heap, Bjork, Boards of Canada, The Album Leaf, Tori Amos, Massive Attack, Rilo Kiley, Sigur Ros, and Air.
The collaboration of Gleam began in the fall of 2007 in Duluth, MN. Both artists have their own musical history throughout Duluth and the Twin cities area giving them both material to bring together.
Heckman has voyaged from being the lead vocal in an acoustic trio(2001) to performing solo on the piano as a singer/songwriter. This led her to perform with a variety of artists such as Pete Ekstam, Mary Bue, Rob Roy, and Erik Berry(mandolin player, Trampled By Turtles, accompanying Heckman on her 2005 EP "Back and Forth"), as well as performances in parts of the midwest, L.A., southern Spain and Paris, France. As much as she loved playing solo, her interest and desire to create electronica was something she was drawn to more-so than an acoustic sound. In the fall of 2006, the band Sens was formed. A down-tempo, trip hop band with JJ Vaas and Scott Gusts (producing), Ian Koivisto(scratch DJ), Rob Roy(percussion) and Heckman on vocals. Unfortunately this band did not last long. Heckman was limited in contributing the piano and the overall sound of the electronic component, which was difficult to work with, but the style and experience Heckman gained with Sens led her to knowing the exact sound she was trying to create, which ultimately led her to Dan.
Nelson's introduction to programming electronica began in 2004 while living and attending college in Minneapolis, MN. He began working with a program called Fruity Loops and is now working with programs such as Live 6, Reason 3, Reaktor 5 and Battery 3. His original attraction of this genre of music was Aphex Twin (a pioneer of Intelligent Dance Music), followed by artists such as The Flashbulb, Venentian Snares, Wisp, Telefon Tel Aviv, Squarepusher and The Postal Service. Dan has attended and performed at Fuktover Fest, a small festival in Austin, TX, primarily consisting of artists in central Texas. Currently with 4mg Records under his independent project, Bath Aide, Dan has future plans with labels such as Sample Oak, Herb Digital, Street Scrape, and Rottgut. Bringing together Heckman's whimsical piano playing and sultry, emotional vocals, complimented by Dan's variety of down-tempo, glitch-hop, ambient beats sets Gleam off to a good start with a fresh, new sound.
Frequent performing throughout Duluth and the Minneapolis/St.Paul area is the goal for spring 2008.
