My influences are numerous, but I do think that if you
visit my website at www.glennthomasbutterhorn.com
that you will see that I listened to all of the Norman
Blake recordings over the year. It would be fair to say that
Norman is the one that made me want to play multiple
instruments. I cannot list all of them, but here is just
a sample of my recommendations.
Doc Watson was my first real taste of the best folk music &
is an american treasure. I love his voice tonal characteristics
and his guitar playing is superb. The recordings with
Doc and Merle are unsurpassed in being totally complimentary.
Doc gets right down to the meat of the melody and digs
in and definitely puts just the right notes in and where
they count. His musical ability is astounding.
I also love: Woody Guthrie, The Carter Family, Bill Monroe,
The Delmore Brothers, Jimmie Rodgers, The Louvin Brothers,
Hank Williams Sr., early Bob Dylan, Tony Rice, Peter Rowan,
Tim O'Brien, Solas, Kevin Burke, The Chieftains, Boys of the
Lough, James Kelly, Mary Black, Daithi Sproule. I am always
listening to the texas singer song writers with admiration, Guy
Clark, Townes Van Zant, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl King,
Steve Earle, Joe Ely, and of course Emmy Lou Harris.
In bluegrass music, Blue Highway is wonderful, Del McCoury
can't be beat, Ronnie is tops on the mando, Ricky Skaggs
and Kentucky Thunder, Joe Carr, David Grisman, the
early Bela Fleck bluegrass recordings, Hot Rize, Sam Bush,
Clarence White and Kentucky C., Kenny Baker, Jerry Douglas,
the Stanleys, Don Reno, Earl Scruggs, The Blue Sky
Boys, Osbourne Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and Roy Acuff.
In folk, I like, Rambling Jack Elliott, Pete Seeger, Tim Hardin,
Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Paxton, Steve Goodman, Hoyt Axton,
Robin and Linda Williams, Bob Bovee and Gail Heil,
Sara Grey and Kearnon Means, Jorma K., John Renbourne,
and Fairport Convention.
Old Time music is one of the main influences on my
thinking, if you can find, Doc Boggs, Uncle Dave Macon,
Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers, the Red Clay Ramblers,
The Seeger Family, The Whites, H. West, Mississippi
John Hurt, the Carters. Love the old time Missouri fiddlers.
Vesta Johnson, Taylor McBaine, Lyle Enloe, John Hartford,
and a whole host of others. Go to website Missouri Old Time
Fiddlers for an entire list of them. Old time fiddle music,
irish music and depression era music are well worth
seeking out and this is what I have done over my
adult years.
Sounds Like
Acoustic Old Timey music from the heartland.
Think: Norman Blake, great ballads, irish influenced,
and nice instrumentals with a dash of bluegrass,
country blues and all original compositions for your
listening pleasure.
A little bit about me. I was born here in
Missouri to parents that were both musicians.
My father was a drummer, lead vocalist, and
band leader until his death in 1993, and my
mother was a barrel house piano player who
loved ragtime, boogie woogie, pop standards,
and listening to the radio. If my mom could
hear it she could play it and had a very gifted
musical ear. She could do it all on the piano.
So, I started out listening to all of this right
away as a youngster, and I thought it was
normal to see musicians at all kinds of odd
hours playing in my home. I spent most of
my childhood at musical events as my father
took me along, but I eventually picked
up the guitar, then the mando, banjo & fiddle.
A local flat picker Jim Renz helped me and
encouraged me to try ol timey mandolin.
I have been devoted to playing mandolin for
the last thirty years. I grabbed a banjo about
six years ago and lately the fiddle has become
my all consuming passion. I had one for years
around the house and finally got with the best
Ol time lady fiddler in the state of Missouri
Ms. Vesta Johnson who is a young 86 years old
and plays the traditional mo. dance tunes.
Locally here in St. Louis I have played in lots
of bands over the years and in duos, trios and
solo performances, but my preference these
days is to do more quality than quantity and to
do showcases of good acoustic music. I practice
routinely with an acoustic group compromised
of five string banjo, guitar and bass. I fill in
the fiddle, the mando, guitar and vocals and
we have a lot of fun playing the old traditional
fiddle tunes. We do a variety of many of the
bluegrass, folk, and irish tunes in my happy
home here in St. Charles county near some old
indian burial grounds “so they say” & strawberry
fields that have yielded to housing development.
Lastly, home recording is one of the great joys
and source of endless frustration trying to get
it right. Solo recording is not for the faint of heart.
Cheers to all of you. Lets keep traditional music alive.

I would be very appreciative if you could take
a few minutes to drop me an email and let
me know how you like the tunes and which
ones were your favorites. I am especially
interested in other acoustic artists recording
my material, so if this might be an aspiration
that you would like to pursue I would be
happy to talk further with you. I am a song
writer looking to get my music out there
into the public domain. I can write for
specific projects as well upon request.

Thanks for the update. I'm always going to feel a little pride in my work on Scenic Limited. Its one of the few albums that I've mastered that I still go back and listen to and share with people. I'm actually not surprised that the Smithsonian should interest, as your music is a real piece of Americana.
Hi Glenn! I'm really happy the CD has gotten favorable reviews. I'm proud to have been a part of it and I'll continue to spread the word about your music. Keep me posted if you know of any airplay. Take care! Jim
