Glenorchy Magpies's Blurbs |
About me:
The Glenorchy Cricket Club is an amatuer sporting club which plays in the Tasmanian Cricket Association (TCA) and is based in Glenorchy in the south of Tasmania.
The club was founded in 1931 and has won 14 two-day titles, the last being in 1976-77 and 3 state one-day titles the most recent back-to-back flags in 2004/05 and 2005/06.
The clubs home ground is King George V (KGV) which is also used for AFL in the off season.
Season 2007/08 saw 1st grade finish in 5th position. At the half way stage of the season the team was well placed for a finals birth, but a combination of poor form, loss of players and unavalability of the clubs state players saw the 1sts team lose their last few matches and miss a spot in the finals.
The highlight for the club this season was the under 17 team winning the grand final against Clarence at KGV. Young Batsman Simon Palmer created headlines in the Mercury and was the star scoring 172 in the semi against SHSB and 125 in the final to lead the side to it's first 17's premiership since 2002/03.
What was even more impressive was that 8 to 10 under 17's actually played up in the grades all season, so were ineligable for the finals, which highlights the club's junior depth which is by far the most talented in the TCA.
This was again proven when 3 players, Nathan Philip, Richie Dilger and Brad Coppleman were selected in the Tasmanian under 15 team which recently returned from Maroochydoore, Queensland finishing in 3rd position which was the best ever position by Tassie in under 15 Championships. Glenorchy was the most represented club with our three players all making strong contributions, Richie Dilgers 84 opening the batting in the final, the highlight.
The club's 2nd and 3rd grade sides failed to make the finals but both improved on last year's performances.
The club's three state contracted players, Brett Geeves, Luke Butterworth and Dane Anderson, all had solid seasons, Brett the stand-out, winning the Ricky Ponting medal, awarded for Tasmania's best player in the domestic season. He also won the Man Of the Match trophy in Tasmania's triumphant Ford Ranger Cup side and is going to play in the exclusive Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Delhi team, which includes players of the calibre of Virender Sehwag and Glenn McGrath.
