Singing Bridges is a global urban sonic sculpture, listening to the sound of bridge cables and hearing the voice of each bridge as a unique musical experience. I imagine them as instruments in a Global Bridge Symphony. I first started recording bridge cables in 1995 on the Anzac Bridge while it was still under construction, ('The city is our temple, the electronic networks our religion, and the sound of the bridge cables is the voice of the divine') and since then have recorded and played on bridges with many wonderful people from Australia to the USA, Finland, Slovakia, UK, Thailand, Holland, Germany, France, Vietnam and other places that I've momentarily forgotten in the constant jetlag. Singing Bridges have been heard at festivals and performances in Helsinki, Copenhagen, New York, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Ljubljana, Glasgow, Stockholm, Berlin, Paris, London, Sydney and more still to come....
Related activities include: creating musical scores from architectural bridge drawings, collaborative compositions; exploring the possibilities of wireless technology for streaming live on bridges; and the application of musical frequency in cables to the installation and tensioning process with vibration engineers (those kooky dudes).
Last year I completed a public art project for Brisbane City Council with a permanent sound installation on The Eleanor Schonell bridge, featuring accelerometers attached to two cables and an interactive touch-screen on the bridge for pedestrians to hear the sound of the cables live. I am developing a series of permanent installations to be placed on bridges with speakers built-in along the walkway for people to listen to the cables as an ambient soundscape while walking past, and the sound streamed online and used for local radio transmission. Upcoming Projects include: Debut performance of Galaxy Radio in a dark moody bridge cabaret; the Global Bridge Symphony, and artist residency with Program Initiative for Art and Architecture, Berlin 2008.
