How do you define your personal style?
Sporty and luxe with well cut designer sportswear because my clothes have to work from day into night.Nothing makes life easier to get dressed in the morning than having lots of great sportswear pieces that you can slip on quickly, like a great jacket from Sport Max or Burberry and a short Missoni skirt for summer. Right now, I’m loving all the amazing clothes from DooRi and Balenciaga. For evening, I just slip on a dress by Alessandro dell'Acqua or Yves St. Laurent and a great pair of Sergio Rossi heels, and I'm instantly dressed.
What are essentials (clothing)?
I can't work or do anything until I'm dressed, it's part of my mindset and gets me into character to deal with whatever task is at hand. I wear black a lot, but spending lots of time in Dallas has forced me to wear more color so I've switched to wearing lots of white shirts and layering them over everything. Cloak unisex skinny jeans work for me with a sporty cashmere sweater, a Celine handbag and my vintage Italian Jackie O style sunglasses. Less is more.
You’re usually wearing:
High heels and a Rolex Submariner men’s watch. Even though I’m six feet tall, I wear heels almost every day, kitten heels, wedge, platform, stilettos; you name it, I have it in my closet. I can’t get any work done unless I'm in uniform, and my uniform usually includes a great pair of heels and a big face men’s watch. I’m really tough on watches so I can’t wear anything too dainty.
What’s in your CD changer/iPod?
Well, let’s see. I have satellite radio in my car, XM in my house, and a 400-CD changer in my office, plus an iPod for traveling. I like listening to new music whenever possible. Right now I’m listening to Serge Gainsbourg; The Good, The Bad and The Queen; Nina Simone; Hot Chip; The Knife; Les Musiques que Jaime; Amy Winehouse; White Stripes; Justice; Spankrock; Battles; Polyphonic Spree; Dr. Dog; and Bonde Do Role.
From looking at you, no one would guess that:
I'm a “Greenie,” and am totally into organics, recycling, and the environment. I make a conscious effort to conserve energy and buy less. I try not to buy things I don’t need, especially when it comes to fashion. Investing in beautiful, well-made clothes like a Burberry trench or an Hermes jacket that you love and hope to wear for a long time makes sense in the long run and helps preserve the industry and high-quality craftsmanship of France and Italy. I believe in supporting living, working artists and that extends to the clothes I buy.
Favorite book:
The Art of Time by Jean Louis Servan-Schreiber, which is must-read annually to remind you that everyone has the same amount of time. It’s what you do with it that matters. Immortality by Milan Kundera is another favorite and, of course, any book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Finding time to read a book is a real luxury these days.
Fantasy vacation:
Santorini in Greece and Barcelona, Spain, are two of my favorite places. I enjoy the city, but I also love the beach. For a quick getaway we head to Playa del Carmen or Tulum, which is just a one-hour flight away.
Favorite guilty pleasure:
Art and music. Wherever I’m traveling, my first thought is to seek out who’s playing where, and check out the local art scene to see what's new. Sometimes, I’ll walk into a gallery and want every piece of artwork I see. It’s thrilling to experience something new in London, Amsterdam, or Berlin that is just emerging on the scene.
