In the summer of 2002, a British hit called Pop Idol landed on our shores and became not only an instant success, but one of the biggest shows in American television history. The grueling competition has crowned Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood and William Hung successively, and has grown bigger and bigger each season. Last year, over a billion votes were received throughout the contest, and millions of viewers tuned in to see whether Nobody or Nobodoy Else would win, making American Idol the #1 show in America. This year, the show was ripped off by some smart alecs in Chicago who think they are funny. This begs the question, Who will become the first Globe Gong Idol?
The Globe Pub is proud to present "Globe Gong Idol" at the Globe Pub. This will be a Gong Show in the Style of American Idol. Globe Gong Idol will be on April 2 at 9pm with sign up at 8pm. Drink Specials include $3.50 Goose Island Draughts as well as the secret cocktail "Gong Idol Punch." There will be a $50 Globe Voucher Prize for both the most "right there" as well as "out there" performer. "Globe Gong Idol" Is looking for Good and Super Talented acts as well as Weird and Wonderful acts. Contestants are encouraged to smart off to the judges and audiences are encouraged to cheer what they love and boo what they don't (including the judges comments!!)
Contestants will Have to deal with our panel of snarky judges including Benny Harris (Jimmy Carr Comedy Idol Finalist, Mirth Control Comedy U.K) as "Limey Cow," an acerbic cruel hearted Brit with no sense of anyone in the world having feelings, Hannah Gansen (Spitfire Comedy, A Demon Who Never Appeared) as "Hannah Abdulla-Rashim-Mumamad-Hussein-Gansen", the love drunk has-been who can bearly hold it together long enough to spit out a complete sentence, and Chicago Comedian Hannibal (Montreal Comedy Festival, Local Spots around Chi-town) as "Randibull", who's just keepin it real, dawg. Also appearing is Tony Blanco as your inimitable host "I am Depressed" for whom all the fame and money in the would can't buy true happiness.
Also, this stars a gong, which will be banged on stage.
The Globe Pub is at 1934 W. Irving Park, right by Lincoln Ave. It is going to be a smack-tastic time and all of us at Globe Gong Idol, Global Warming and the Globe Pub Hope to see all of you there.
