   Glow: parlo di me
Chi sono:
On July 19, Glow will be hosting an all-night event of media art, performances, music, and sculpture installations.

Both internationally renown artists and numerous local artists will use the iconic landmark of the Southern California beach as a one-night studio/gallery, all under the night sky.

Whether you get your brain waves translated onto a LED display or find yourself lost in a Neptunian lair of a surreal persuasion, you must join us on July 19th to experience this unique night and greet the dawn with others so inclined as to believe our common spaces can be playful, inspiring, and thought-provoking, not just functional.

Glow is the only event that has ever gotten permission to open the Santa Monica pier and beach to the public all night from 7 pm to 7 am.

I had a lot of anticipation for Santa Monica's greatly hyped event last night. This event which could have had such resonance fell flat on many levels. The first indication of this was the area south of the pier where rows of glow sticks were stuck in the sand. Talk about un-imaginative. This is art? More like art fart. A few dozen helium balloons tied together on the north side of the pier managed to be even more disappointing. At least the bouncy pilllow structure was lit and somewhat more creative. The only thing that managed to captivate my attention for more than a pass-by was the projections against the water spray. Looking something like the aurora boreallis this piece was beautiful to look at and did show me something I hadn't seen before.... kind-of.

What I did gather from this is the need and demand for something of this nature. There were so many people attending that you would think they were giving away free money. The crowds were intense and there were lines everywhere. I didn't even manage to make my way onto the pier but was told later it was just as well since there were no additional art installations there. The hanging sculptures under the pier were creative and fun if you were fortunate enough to see them.

I really wanted to see the orchestra perform on the ferris wheel. Did that even happen? There was no way to know what was happening when and there wasn't enough going on to convince me fight the crowds and dodge the baby strollers to wait around and see. And what about the installation where the sea was to glow? Did anyone see that? Did you have to walk to the end of pier to view it? A little more information would have been greatly appreciated. And with overcast evening, someone missed a great opportunity to light up the sky with lasers. I totally expected to see that anyway and was shocked at how it was just too obvious to be absent.

I appluad Santa Monica for "allowing" us to use

My friends and I had a great time.
Unfortunately the Music got shut down at 2am. But we brought our own music and beverages. Yes, it could have been better organized, but I also don't think that they were expecting 200,000 people.
Great idea, I'd love to see it evolve next year!

I agree the show definately lacked and could have been much better organized but how did you people not see the DJs? Was it because there were too many raver highschoolers rolling that you couldnt see? Oh wait, yes that was probably it.

i was a bit disappointed too: First off the "shuttle": the info given on the website was misinformation. The Big Blue Bus lines were not running all night long "shuttling" people in; so parking away from SM meant leaving early or finding a taxi back to our cars. While the art was fantastic the only art that was available was around the pier and palisaides park. it was a difficult event to fully experience. If I were to plan this event it would not be during the summer. most of the people that were at the pier were just in the way of those that came for art. next year plan for mid-september, still good weather and fewer people around the beach.

I mirror James' comment below

"The most over hyped, under delivering event I have ever been to."

Pretty incredulously insulting. Was this put on by the City of Santa Monica to increase revenue in the area? Must have had powerful advertising- It's the only thing that could possibly bring that many people to an area without delivering an event to match the seemingly massive sales in parking, food and drink sales.

What a huge waste of time and effort :(
