David Williams was the name of my English teacher in school, which will not be of great importance to you. A David Williams (no relation whatsoever) is, however, also the man behind the 82nd Avenue project and thus responsible for an immediately recognisable style mix defying all categories. “Crowd of Zero” is certainly a wayward little beast: Crunching beats, straight-forward melodies, non-linear arrangements, cowbell-funk melted into abstract electronica, melancholic guitar lines and solitary bass mantras, immediate as well as introvert moods, lazy and throat-gripping motives, it’s all there and (golly!) it makes sense, too. Williams has listened to anything from Acid House to Hardcore, but his own music is weary of all to easy classifications. It’s too smart to be “techno”, too groovy for “listening music”, too physical to be “intelligent”. Well, whatever – as long as this man can keep evoking ambiances as stimulating and halucinatory as these, no sensible person should mind.

David Williams aka ‘82nd ave enjoys building, transforming and playing around with beats. Somehow I am sure musicians like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher or Cristian Vogel had a big impact on him. But David propagates his own kind of sound. With his tricky beats he’s closer to elektro than to drill’n'bass-cascades making the listener mad.
Not all the tracks on the “Crowd of Zero”-Album have melodic grooves, sometimes David gets lost in playing with his effects and plugins. But he rocks when he combines beats, weird sounds and melodies like in “Plankton Dub”, “Ramshackle” or the fat electro-track “Commuter Belt Booty Bass”. Than, when David lets the groove phlow, we get sucked into the frisky world of ‘82nd ave.
One of my favorite tracks is “It started Off Acoustic”. While introducing the listener to a smooth acoustic guitar in the beginning, we witness how David chops up the samples and lets them interact. Altogether “Crowd Of Zero” is filled with humour, tricky beats and a love for stereo-effects. Definitive worth a try.
