GNS Subway was created in 1988 when Peter Gawkowski opened his first Subway restaurant on the corner of Henry St, and Summit Ave in Roosevelt Park. However, it started taking shape well before that.

Originally, Walt Gawkowski, Pete's father owned a grocery store on that location called 'Gov's Market.' It did well for many years until the larger grocery stores moved in the area. At this time Pete decided to take a semester off from his schooling at WMU in order to help his dad and the stores sinking sales. What started out as just a semester off to help, became a career, as Pete never left. When Walt retired in 1984 Pete bought it from him and began to look for something to take the place of the meat departments slowing sales.

Pete had first seen a Subway in Grand Rapids, and felt it was worth the risk. So, he along with his father and brother John, initially bought 2 franchises for only $7000. The first store was then opened in 1988, followed by the second in North Muskegon, which was the entire Subway Franchises 3000 store opened!

And with that began GNS Subway, which was origanally Gov N Sons Subway. What started out as 2 stores, has now become 16 stores spread out all over West Michigan! The newest store just opened in July 2007 in the Grand Haven Walmart.
