About me:
Pushing the boundaries of music photography ...
I want to demonstrate that music photography can be produced to the technically advanced and conceptually apt level that is evident in other photographic genres, specifically those associated with fashion.
When ‘music photography’ is referenced the majority of people think of the musical press, (e.g. NME, Mojo and Q magazine) which tends to publishes lower-end music photography. It is this quality of imagery that has given music photography a bad reputation, classing it as the lowest genre of photography. Much like with fashion, there needs to be something revolutionary to hit the photographic world in terms of its approach to music. It seems that the photography industry is accepting of fashion photographers photographing music, but music photographers are stereotyped as being unable to shoot anything other than orangey live shots or moody against-the-brick-wall promotional images. This is not always the case; there are photographers who are music specific which produce images, which are on a par with the quality found in fashion.
I appreciate that for the reputation of music photography to be turned around it will take more than one photographer so hopefully there are a number of other photographers out there hoping to do the same thing. Ultimately, I want to show that music photography can be done well, can have the thinking and production behind it that fashion supposedly has, and that it is a genre worth credit.
