“Imagine the ego of the human race, to consider themselves so grand, as to warrant a creator worthy of praise.” — Robert Brunswick Jr.

“The suppression of uncomfortable ideas may be common in religion or in politics, but it is not the path to knowledge, and there’s no place for it in the endeavor of science.” — Carl Sagan

“To explain the unknown by the known is a logical procedure; to explain the known by the unknown is a form of theological lunacy.” — David Brooks

“Atheism is more than just the knowledge that gods do not exist and that religion is either a mistake or a fraud. Atheism is an attitude, a frame of mind that looks at the world objectively, fearlessly, always trying to understand all things as a part of nature.” — Carl Sagan

“I have little confidence in any enterprise or business or investment that promises dividends only after the death of the stockholders.” — Robert Ingersoll

“Atheism is a requirement for a complete human being. Religion is a crutch that is shackled to you, one you never really needed in the first place, but were convinced by others that you couldn’t live without. Once you discover it’s only an illusion, that it’s not even a real crutch, you discard it gladly.” — Brent Yaciw

“It is an interesting and demonstrable fact, that all children are atheists and were religion not inculcated into their minds, they would remain so.” — Ernestine Rose

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” — Epicurus

“Men rarely (if ever) manage to dream up a God superior to themselves. Most Gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child.” — Robert A Heinlein

“If we expect God to subscribe to one religion at the exclusion of all the others, then we should expect damnation as a matter of chance. This should give Christians pause when expounding their religious beliefs, but it does not.” — Sam Harris

“I have never seen the slightest scientific proof of the religious ideas of heaven and hell, of future life for individuals, or of a personal God. So far as religion of the day is concerned, it is a damned fake… Religion is all bunk.” — Thomas Edison

“Religion is like a virus that affects the behaviour of its host in such a way as to propagate itself further.” — Jack Pritchard

“It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.” — Carl Sagan

“Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned.” — Anonymous

“I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.” — Susan B. Anthony

“The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike.” — Delos B. McKown

“I’ve yet to find anything convincing about the arguments Christians make for the existence of this God chap, and feel, that if he does exist, events such as the Holocaust, Cambodian massacres and Limp Bizkit illuminate the fact that he’s been asleep at the wheel for quite some time.” — Wil Forbis

“Blind faith is an ironic gift to return to the Creator of human intelligence.” — Anonymous

“An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church. An Atheist believes that deed must be done instead of a prayer said. An Atheist strives for involvement in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty vanished, war eliminated.” - Madalyn Murray O’Hair

I am an atheist blogger living in the Deep South. Though I grew up in the Midwest well within the Bible Belt, I have never been a religious person. My parents allowed me to make my own choices in this area, and I am extremely grateful that they did that.

Living in Alabama, I have been exposed to all manner of religious extremism. I have met genuinely nice people of faith, and I am not trying to insinuate that all religious people are bad. However, let's not sugarcoat religion and pretend that it is not dangerous.

I have also been witness to many truly disgusting things that have been done in the name of religion. In addition to this, religion is utterly annoying. When the Godbots of the Bible Belt aren't expressing their hatred of homosexuals or protesting the building of a Hooter's restaurant, they can be found handing out literature, preaching in open-air commons, and inviting everyone they see to worship services.

Unfortunately, the same delusion that leads them to these actions also prevents them from seeing any reason in arguments made contrary to their accepted beliefs.

This is why I blog. To reach out to others that feel similarly in hopes that one day our presence will actually be respected.

I know. I'm a hopeless idealist.

I know you must have an account on richarddawkins.net.
Find my group, "Bible Belt Atheists," and join up. It's really a start up group right now, but I'm planning on expanding.

I know right! Kinda FREAKED out. My cousin would force me to go to church.
I HATED that. Some of the stories didn't quite make since. I started thinking there has to be more then just us. There's no way there's all that infinite space and we're the only ones here.

I used to be Christian and I went to Presbyterian Church(weird) up until I was 17 and the pastor was trying to get me to speak in "tongues". I swear he just had some type of trance over them. He would put his hand pn my head and scream "let it come out". And every one else was like "Yes Jesus!!". All that while speaking in tongues, REALLY WEIRD. That's when I was like, hold up, this can't be right. I get a lot of crap from my mom for being Atheist. I know a couple of younger people, around 17, that are Christian, but they don't like try to preach to us, the respect us. Honestly, I think eventually Atheism will be respected. Becuase the old fuckers that made shit like this aren't going to around forever. Our generation will take over.

I'm n00b when it comes to religion and so forth, but I'm VERY open minded. I am also into government conspiracy theories. Honestly, I don't like calling them that, but that's what most people know them as.
Their not conspiracy's, their cold hard facts!!

I love your about me! Hopefully one day they will see atheism as a religion. Religion is a belief system, there's no reason why it can't. Oh wait, yeah, the government tells us it's bad then it must be right?! pshhh....my ass!

yeah, it very different talking to his family. it's basically the polar opposite of how i was raised. I thought that quote on your page was interesting, that children are all atheists and if religion is not introduced to them, they will not find it. I think I'm a living example of the truth of that statement. Most of my brothers and sisters (there's six of us) feel the same way.

people browse function...interesting. i'm so electronically challenged.
things are splendid. although i wish sometimes i could keep my giant atheist mouth shut because my boyfriend's aunt told me she hates me and wants to slap me the night before Thanksgiving when we somehow migrated into religious/proposition 8 territory which is basically the mason dixon line of our conversations.

i just had time to glance at your site (i will return later when i have time to read it all) but i tried to vote for what i celebrate this time of year and my choices are limited to one thing. i try to celebrate everything at every time, but now specifically i would have to say thanksgiving, hanukkah (traditionally), christmas (secularly), existence, love, family, friends, life. So I'm not sure how to cast my vote.
