I am an atheist blogger living in the Deep South. Though I grew up in the Midwest well within the Bible Belt, I have never been a religious person. My parents allowed me to make my own choices in this area, and I am extremely grateful that they did that.
Living in Alabama, I have been exposed to all manner of religious extremism. I have met genuinely nice people of faith, and I am not trying to insinuate that all religious people are bad. However, let's not sugarcoat religion and pretend that it is not dangerous.
I have also been witness to many truly disgusting things that have been done in the name of religion. In addition to this, religion is utterly annoying. When the Godbots of the Bible Belt aren't expressing their hatred of homosexuals or protesting the building of a Hooter's restaurant, they can be found handing out literature, preaching in open-air commons, and inviting everyone they see to worship services.
Unfortunately, the same delusion that leads them to these actions also prevents them from seeing any reason in arguments made contrary to their accepted beliefs.
This is why I blog. To reach out to others that feel similarly in hopes that one day our presence will actually be respected.
I know. I'm a hopeless idealist.
Who I'd like to meet:
other atheists, agnostics, secularists, humanists, brights, freethinkers, etc.

Find my group, "Bible Belt Atheists," and join up. It's really a start up group right now, but I'm planning on expanding.

things are splendid. although i wish sometimes i could keep my giant atheist mouth shut because my boyfriend's aunt told me she hates me and wants to slap me the night before Thanksgiving when we somehow migrated into religious/proposition 8 territory which is basically the mason dixon line of our conversations.
