Influences
We are so proud to annouce this year that for the GogirlsDC Musicfest our charity is Northwest Center in Washington, DC. The Northwest Center currently houses a maximum of 5 women at a time, including their children if they have any. (Not all homes allow women to bring their children)
They can come to live in the home from any time during their pregnancy and stay for up to 18 months/2years! (This is one of few homes in the country that let their women stay this long!) Each woman living in the home must be willing to work the program which starts with a one on one meeting with the director to set long term, short term and immediate goals. The program includes classes on parenting, life skills, budgeting, and more. Each woman is also required to help with the daily chores and cooking during their stay and must either be attending school or working for a minimum number of hours a week.
To learn more about the home, please visit their website at www.northwestcenter.net.
GogirlsDC Musicfest will be October 18th from 7-10pm at Union Jacks in Bethesda! Donations will be glady accepted!
Annie Sidley hosts a monthly showcase @ Union Jacks every 3rd Sunday of the month (unless otherwise stated). To be a part of this showcase all you have to do is send me a message on either myspace or my email address at Anniesid@aol.com and after I review your music I'll contact you regarding a 15 minute spot. You are always welcome to just come on out to any show and I'll put you on a list to perform at least 1 song. Here's the information for the showcases:

About GoGirlsMusic.com: the oldest and largest online community of indie women musicians! GoGirlsMusic.com is a unique organization that focuses on advancing the careers of independent female artists. Founded in early 1996, the organization works tirelessly to help artists through education, networking, and events like the GoGirlsMusicFest, Invasion of the GoGirls during SXSW, GoGirls @ Folk Alliance and more. Artists who become involved have the opportunity to perform, have their work reviewed, and get involved with a hardworking group of women who "get things done" in the music scene.
Madalyn Sklar: Founder/Publisher "Madalyn is a force of nature and has made GoGirls synonymous with independent female music." -- Janet, a member of GoGirls. GoGirlsMusic.com's mission is to promote, support and empower indie women in music! Madalyn Sklar started the organization in 1996 with a vision of bringing together independent women musicians from around the country. 12 years later, GoGirlsMusic.com has become a welcome destination for women in music through networking and events. GoGirls produces great annual events such as the GoGirlsMusicFest, Invasion of the GoGirls and more. In the last 9 years, Sklar has spearheaded well over 100 benefit showcases for various organizations including the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, MusiCares, American Liver Foundation, Nicole Brown Charitable Foundation and more. She has spoken on music panels at 2NMC, Dewey Beach, Dfest, DIY Convention, Folk Alliance, Hyperactive Music Festival, Invasion of the GoGirls, Millennium Music Conference, NEMO, PLAY:stl, Rockrgrl and South Park Music Festival. She has been named one of 10 Powerful Women in Music by Curve magazine and one of the 15 People You Should Know In the Biz by Indie-Music.com.
Madalyn is also a music business coach & consultant, blogger, social networks expert and author. She has spent 12 years working with a wide range of independent musicians, helping them get focused and energized. Her goal is to help indie artists achieve greater success in the music business by working smarter not harder. She provides one-on-one consulting and coaching to musicians at IndieMusicCoach.com.
Eugene Foley, President of Foley Entertainment, Inc. says:
"Madalyn Sklar and GoGirlsMusic.com have become an outstanding resource for musicians around the world. From networking opportunities and special events to career advancing educational programs, this is a 'must join' organization. I had the opportunity to lecture with Ms. Sklar at several music industry conferences. I was able to see first-hand the depth and power of her abilities to gather information, analyze, teach and provide solutions. Madalyn is clearly the consummate professional, and most importantly, one who truly cares about the artists."

Better Days Are Ahead - From Slavery to Obama's Victory
Take a journey through history! Stereofame's rising artist, Big Dog, has created a rap video that showcases the struggle and tenacity of the civil rights movement era. The video, entitled "Better Days Are Ahead" was released on Saturday, April 4th, on the popular interactive music website, www.Stereofame.com. April 4th is a historic date as it commemorates the 41st anniversary of the slaying of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The rap video provides a historical time line of our past, present and future, while also delivering a powerful message of faith and positive expectation.
