   About GOING NORTH PRODUCTIONS

17 May 08 07:30 PM -Going North Productions Presents "The return of Clive Gregson!" St George’s Church Community Room, Great George Street, Leeds, Northeast LS1 3BR - £6 / £7 door "The return of Clive Gregson!" In concert + Support. For info email info@goingnorthpproductions.co.uk

Going North Productions is a group of friends who love roots and acoustic music who want to bring quality artists to Leeds. GNP run regular live events, usually at St George's Church in Leeds City Centre. GNP was launched in 2006, with some financial support from the Greenbelt Trust. Our first gig was in Spring 2006 when we had Rodney Cordner and Jean Pierre Rudolph to play. Since then we have had Jez Lowe and Clive Gregson. Part of the ethos of the group is to provide performance opportunities for musicians who have used homeless projects in Leeds and Bradford. So, we always offer the support slot to one of our partner organistions working in homelessness. As of September 2007, GNP is working with the following partners to provide support artists: Assisi House Project, Bradford; St George's Crypt, Leeds; Bradford Day Shelter.

Richard Thompson once sang of the journey 'From Galway To Graceland'. Cordner and Rudolph have been making the trip from Portadown to Strasbourg for a few decades now. This 2001 compilation is an excellent introduction to their art. There are judicious covers (including Gordon Lightfoot, Ralph McTell and Johnny Cash), traditional songs, instrumentals, social commentary and riotous originals such as "Fiddle Sticks", about a Chinese meal. All these get the Cordner voice and guitar, ruggedly dovetailing with Rudolph's dazzling violin work. It's one of those can't-go-wrong releases. A sheer joy thoroughly recommended for those with a taste for the Irish folk tradition.

At times one could be listening to traditional folk such as Christy Moore, at times there are more hints of Dylan or even Woody Guthrie. The mandolin, dobro and accordion feature heavily as well as acoustic guitars, and the songwriting is of the highest quality. A couple of the songs strayed too far into coun
