Going PostATL: A New Music Event in Atlanta
Highlighting Atlanta's Post-Rock Music
Generally speaking, if you ask someone to think of a great music scene, Athens, Austin, Seattle, or Chicago will spring to mind. Atlanta may also pop up for its reputation of having a great hip-hop and R&B scene. The organizers of 'going postATL' (pronounced post a.t.l.) would like to see one more genre added to the list: post-rock.
For the uninitiated, post-rock is a style of rock music that uses many of the elements of traditional rock, but in non-traditional ways. Post-rock is often purely instrumental, but sometimes includes a minimal amount of vocals. Some of the most popular names in the genre include Mogwai, Tortoise, and Sigur Rós, as well as newer bands Explosions in the Sky and Mono.
Atlanta has not yet produced a post-rock act to receive the level of exposure that the above-named acts have. In spite of that, the organizers of 'going postATL' feel that there are a lot of great local bands in the genre. The notion that Atlanta-based bands could benefit by organizing and playing together is one of the main inspirations for 'going postATL.'
One of the inspirations for the founders of 'going postATL' is the shoegaze scene in the UK of 20 years ago. Jeremy Wilhelm, one of the organizers of the event and bassist for Sound of Seventy Three comments, ''the shoegaze scene was comprised of several bands known for going out and supporting each other at shows. We'd love to see going postATL become a similar event and evolve into a similar subscene.''
While primarily featuring local bands, the event will also highlight smaller acts that are touring nationally, in the hopes of helping them connect with local post-rock fans. The first 'going postATL' event will be held at The EARL on Thursday, August 3rd, and will feature local bands Sound of Seventy Three and Ours To Alibi, along with My Education from Austin, TX.
''We've had to play so many shows with bands that were so stylistically different from us that it just didn't make any sense. The idea here is to have a whole night where, if you are a fan of post-rock music, you will not hear anything that you hate from the time you walk in the door till the time you leave'' says Sound of Seventy Three's Doug Johnson. To that end, 'going postATL' will feature the talents of DJ Anna Satana spinning indie and post-rock music between every set. Doug continues ''we hope to work closely with the bands, radio, promoters, DJs and clubs to really give the local fans of this music something special that they can call their own.''

Going PostATL I:
Going PostATL is a semi-occasional post-rock event held in Atlanta and featuring local post-rock music with occasional, touring bands as well. The goal of the event is to highlight local post-rock music and present the bands that do it to a wider audience. All fans of post-rock and bands that play it are welcome. If you're a band, we only ask that you embrace and help promote Going PostATL. We hope to see the development of a community of post-rock musicians that support each other.
