Die Band, ursprünglich bekannt unter dem Namen „Godzilla“, wurde im Jahr 1996 in Bayonne (Südfrankreich) gegründet. Sie traten mit erfolgreichen Bands wie u.a. Metallica, Lamb of God, Behemoth, Job for a Cowboy auf und sind hauptsächlich in Frankreich und den USA bekannt.

Am 20.Oktober 2008 spielten Gojira als Vorband für In Flames im Wiener Gasometer.

Gojiras Texte sind hauptsächlich von Umweltthemen geprägt. Die südfranzösische Landschaft und ihre Küsten inspirieren diese Texte über die Natur und den Planeten.

Gojiras lyrics are greatly influenced by environmental issues. The coastlines and great landscapes of southern France inspired those songs about nature and the planet..

Sound

Gojiras Sound ist schwer zu klassifizieren. Man bringt Death Metal, Progressive Metal, Trash Metal und Groove Metal mit Gojira in Verbindung. Die Einflüsse sind bei Death, Morbid Angel, Meshuggah, Metallica, Tool, und Neurosis zu finden. Gojira spielen technisch ausgeklügelten, rhythmisch höchst anspruchsvollen Metal. Das Songwriting ist progressiv und intelligent.
Live Shows sind eine beharrliche Einladung genauer hinzuhören. Die Musik tritt in den Vordergrund und man wird in eine Soundkulisse gehüllt, die aggressiv und melodisch, brachial und hoffnungsvoll zugleich ist. Die Performance ist voller Energie und Ehrlichkeit, es ist unmöglich sich der Symphatie und Intelligenz der vier Musiker zu entziehen!

Their influences can be found with Death, Morbid Angel, Meshuggah, Metallica, Tool or Neurosis. Gojira's Metal is highly sophisticated on a technical level and rythmically excellent. The songwriting is progressive and intelligent. Live shows are an insisting invitation to listen closer, the music takes the focus and pulls you into a wall of sound thats aggressive and melodic, brutal and full of hope at the same time. The performance is energetic and honest and makes it impossible to resist the charme and intelligent of those four musicians.
