..GOJJO.. - the band. Home, base, family..... The first meeting of the players was in Philadelphia for a fruitful session, and their only live performance that wow'ed a Philadelphia audience - no easy task. This international band is made up of acclaimed German musician MARKUS REUTER (Touch Guitar) living in Austria, Innsbruck to be exact and three well known Philadelphia, USA-based musicians: JOHN SWANA (EVI - Electronic Valve Instrument), TIM MOTZER (Bartitone Guitar), and DOUG HIRLINGER (Drums)..... Together they have formed a new monster quartet with much promise: GOJJO. Immediate plans are to secure bookings for European shows, and continue recording/writing/perfoming in NYC/Philadelphia. The bulk of their material thus far has come from improvising in the studio and developing the material organically. The music you're now listening to, represents the fruits of their first meeting. In GOJJO he leaves his trumpet behind to continue to explore the sonic colours of the Steiner EVI (electronic valve instrument) triggering the Dave Smith Evolver synth via breathe..... His list of recordings and credits is staggering. A true explorer - his interest has veered over the years from post-bop to include electronic music and computer software audio programming. His vistas ever rising..... Swana has performed and/or toured with the Mingus Big Band, and the Dave Holland Big Band, and has also played with well-known jazz names such as Don Patterson, Shirley Scott, Mickey Roker, Stanley Turrentine, Harold Mabern, Cecil Payne, Johnny Coles, Ralph Peterson, Charles Fambrough, Bobby Watson, Craig Handy, Chris Potter, Stephen Scott, Tim Warfield, Eric Alexander, Sam Newsome, Brad Mehldau, Vincent Herring, Uri Caine, Tim Armacost, Peter Leitch, Peter Bernstein, Mark Turner, Jon Gordon, Donny McCaslin, Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Bowen, Greg Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Seamus Blake, and Robin Eubanks..... He's been working in Philadelphia and internationally for the past decade with some wonderful artsits: King Britt, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Ursula Rucker (who he's toured the world with for over 9 years), Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit (CAN), Nine Horses (featuring David Sylvian + Steve Jansen), Les Nubians, and Kenny Lattimore among others. His guitar and production work is featured on over 60 albums, singles, and remixes. He also oversees his own small indie record label - 1k recordings - as a vehicle to release his own work. In the last two years, he's released 6 albums on his 1k imprint. He's scored music for the original motion picture Miami Vice and co-produced the critically acclaimed album 'King Britt presents-Sister Gertrude Morgan'. He has lived in Philadelphia since 2001. Previous to that Doug resided in New York City beginning in 1995. Doug was priviledged to play with many great and talented individuals during his stay in New York including Jason Moran, Luis Perdomo, Wayne Escoffery, Phil Harper, Jacob Sachs, Gutbucket, Myron Walden, and Ben Gerstein. Doug graduated from Manhattan School of Music in 1998...
