golden virtues debut album out now thru mgm
“This debut from brisbane’s golden virtues proves to be quite a classy affair. filled with well arranged strings and other nice touches (small bursts of static, for example), the album is a well rounded and appealing effort. ‘folk metal’ is an offering to the altar of tori amos, the flute riffs of ‘carburetor’ recall ron burgundy in a jazz club and ‘the seventh sea’ is a cinematic instrumental that awards the album a certain depth. the album works better in its slower moments, but it is the duo of female vocalists that really lift the record up. alternately vulnerable and tough, they are most lush when in harmony, coursing together and overlapping. moving from folkier moments into straight rock, and into moodier regions, this is a solid release and one that will no doubt please those already familiar with the band as well as garner them a few more listeners”
