Who I'd like to meet:
Every family has a secret. Every individual struggles with their identity. Outside the Box chronicles one woman’s quest to break the silence at the heart of her familial relationships and figure out who she is. Filmmaker Lacey Schwartz was born into a middle-class white Jewish family in New York. When she was 18 her mother revealed that Lacey’s father was black. This personal documentary follows Lacey on her journey to confront her mother and two fathers about her mixed-race identity, and uncover the traditions, heroes, heritage, roots, and identity of the larger American Black Jewish community. Shot in an intimate style, with probing camera work and a sense of humor, Outside the Box will combine observational footage of Lacey, her friends, and family with her current video diary and interviews with her parents and other black Jews. Framing this footage will be home videos from the past 25 years. The film will employ an experienced, but small crew, allowing desired intimacy with high production value. The result will be a revealing, first-of-its-kind portrait of a people who are figuring out how to exist “outside the box” in a society that still forces us to check only one.
