If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you knew Buddy Blue as an original member of the Beat Farmers, and as a solo artist, producer, and music journalist of the highest order.
He was certainly all of those things. He was also my friend. Of course, Buddy had a LOT of friends. As charismatic as he was talented, Buddy was invariably the coolest guy in the room. Still, he made each of his friends feel special, as if they were his BEST friend.
I know that those who frequented the guestbook at Buddy’s website all felt that way. Fans from across the globe found their way to buddyblue.com, and stuck around to engage in banter inane, profane, and profound with Buddy and the international cast of characters he had drawn. Most of these people would never have the privilege of meeting the man in person, but they all loved him, and he loved them back.
On April 2, 2006, Buddy Blue left us far too soon, as none of us was quite done with him. Following Buddy's passing, Richie “The Flying Hippo” Evans, a guestbook veteran from Scotland, suggested that the musically inclined members of the guestbook (of which there were many) ought to record covers of Buddy-penned tunes, in tribute to our late friend. Which brings us to the present, some sixteen months after Hippo’s brilliant suggestion.
What has resulted is a startlingly eclectic album made up mostly of contributions from the folks at the Buddy Blue Guestbook, but with additional tunes from Romy Kaye, The Farmers, and a few others. I am the de facto “producer” of the record. There is a long list of people who have held my inexperienced hand through this lengthy process, and they all shall be given credit in due time. Immediate thanks must be extended, however, to Buddy's old pal (and my new pal), Sven-Erik Seaholm, whose brilliance knows no bounds. To be released in the fall of '08, “Goldmine…The Songs of Buddy Blue” is a tribute to our dear friend, gone but never to be forgotten. Proceeds from record sales will assist in the funding of the education of Lulu, Buddy's beloved (and excessively cute) daughter.
We hope he’s proud of what we’ve done.

I'm glad I was able to pick up the GOLDMINE CD when I was San Diego area last month to see The Farmers. This is a great collection of music, and everyone associated should be proud of creating such a nice tribute to Buddy Blue.

On the note of a shameless plug- - Sorry for posting this as a comment instead of sending an invitation…we’re too stupid to figure out how to send an event invitation! The Ridge Route Romeos are coming to Ronnie Mack's Barn Dance on Tuesday, July 7 for a set of songs about drinking, bad decisions, and degenerate behavior. We'll be featuring special guests Marty Rifkin on steel and John Groover McDuffie on guitar. Fun for the whole family, as long as the whold family is over 21 and not confined to the trailer park by an electronic tracking device! There will be 5 of the finest roots-music bands in LA, with the all-star Barn Dance Band kicking it off at 8:30. The Ridge Route Romeos take the stage at 10:30.

I have it straight from the horse's ass...ahem, mouth...that the discs were delivered from the printer on Thursday and Lance has them at his house. They are ready to ship to CD Baby and can be ordered there in a few days. Lance has been posting updates on the Farmers music website (thefarmersmusic.com). The Farmers also have a new CD out that should be great and a release party later in June at the Casbah. Everybody order a copy of the disc, I have a preview and it rocks-there will be a feature story about it in the SD Troubadour Monday 6/1 written by meself.
