Sometimes bands hit on song titles that perfectly nail down their sound. Such is the case with Gold's "Herpes and Fleas," a scuzzy, off-kilter dirge that's every bit as dirty as its name suggests. The tune finds guitarists Jess Northup and Micheal McSherry locked in a four-minute duel, circling and jabbing like barroom brawlers as Kevin Vlack lays down a slapdash drum beat. It's turbo-charged, visceral and sounds even better cranked to maximum volume.
The rest of the material (streaming at myspace.com/goldrockmusic) is equally explosive, loaded with off-kilter rhythms and fitful starts and stops, reminiscent of a more melodic U.S. Maple. "Arnold Writer" sounds like an alternate soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof," the guitars revving like hulking muscle cars. "I Am Nothing" piles on meandering solos and sporadic drum fills before coalescing into a funk-punk jam -- complete with falsetto vocals -- at its midpoint. ~Chicago Tribune - Andy Downing
The two guitarists in Chicago band Gold seem determined to deliver strong, bare-bones rock hooks and spontaneously meander about their fretboards in controlled-chaos interplay. The odd starts and stops in Gold's tunes mean there's actually some complexity here, but a raw and sprawling feel dominates the music. Judging from some new tracks, the band's sound tightened up a bit as it wrote and recorded nine songs for a forthcoming, untitled full-length album last year. It still has an excitingly loose and open quality to it, taking a lot of cues from bands like U.S. Maple, but also channels the noisy possibilities into more thoroughly fleshed-out songs, a balance that raises hopes for a fun live set.
