In 1995, Masashi Momota joined Fujishiro(Gu)'s band as a keyboardist. Then shortly after, Masashi became a main composer of this band. The Band had been looking for vocalist and had been seeking a band style.
In 1997, fortunately, the band could find Anoji who was a leader and guitarist of girls slash metal band The band asked her to convert to guitar & vocalist and she got it. After this, Masashi and Anoji had been took a place of core members, and changed band name to "gonin-ish".
In 1998, gonin-ish made a first demo tape to get a deal. It was a self recording material. Since this, Masashi became a recording engineer to realize our sound (world) and this style had not been changed from now.
In 1999, we got a deal from indie label in Japan for the first album. And we released self titled 1st album in 2000. Also gonin-ish started gigs with Japanese bands. For the next step, they released single album "Muge no hito". This single album contains only one song. It was an experiment for the 2nd album.
In 2005, we got a deal from Disk Union which is very famous CD shop in Japan. With their effort, our band name was spread to metal and progressive rock fans. Meanwhile, they were recognized as maniac and technical band in Japan. There were many member changes (except Masashi and Anoji) since they started gonin-ish, however concept of band had never been changed.
In 2008 we made a contract with Season of Mist, and 2nd album"naishikyo-Sekai" was released.
"gonin-ish Q&A"
Q1 : What does “gonin-ish” mean?
We referred to the work of "Hyakunin-ish" to name our band. "Hyakunin-ish" consists of short poems written by one-hundred people (“Hyakunin”). The word "ish" means one poem (“Waka”). These "Waka" date back as early as the seventh century and were assembled together in the thirteenth century. Today, it is a well known Japanese card game. We were inspired by this, and thus named our group "gonin-ish.” “Gonin” means five people, so therefore, the meaning of the band name in Japanese is that of “songs being united by five people.”
Q2 : What genre defines gonin-ish?
It's very difficult to describe ourselves. And if we tried, it would probably make no sense! For example, if ten people were asked to define us by genre, depending on their background, it is more than likely that they would all say ten different responses. We have so many influences and place so many different elements into our music to create our concept of “invisible awe”! So there are no understandings and misunderstandings; however you feel about our music is right! Therefore, we don’t need to be constrained by a genre. In other words, is this not true progressive music?
Q3 : What's the concept of gonin-ish?
“Invisible awe” can be a one of the keywords. We thought that a flood of messages can create an “invisible awe” which can never be realized simply. Regarding this, for us to express this concept to our listeners, we have placed many messages and emphasis into the artwork, our costumes, the kanji-characters (fonts) fonts that we use, our lyrics, and our entire songs. Now, it’s your turn as the listener to find our message and create the story within your own mind.
Q4 : Where do the lyrical themes come from?
Our vocalist, Anoji, chooses ancient words from Japanese classic literature that aren't widely used in the modern world and are difficult to decipher, even for the Japanese public. Also, sometimes Anoji takes great inspiration for her lyrics from modern Manga and Anime which include ancient traditions.
Q5 : Why do you use Japanese?
If you listen to progressive or metal bands from non English-speaking countries, you can often be impressed by the beauty and sound of their native words, even if you cannot understand them. Therefore, we are convinced that if Japanese style is in the scene, it’s really not very strange.
Q6 : How’s the best way to listen to gonin-ish?
Our lyrics are in Japanese. We think this is not a disadvantage because we use ancient words, so even Japanese listeners can't understand! Therefore, we recommend listening in this way - Close your eyes! Our songs can present a most enchanting sight to you! Sometimes it is awe, or maybe fear, or even something mystical! You can imagine freely, and each of you can make a story in your minds. That's the way to enjoy our sound! Try this!
Q7 : What does the artwork mean?
All of the artwork was created by the Japanese illustrator Mr. Shin-Rock. We don't know what he thought when he felt our sound. Also, we never asked him specifically what they meant to him. The artwork has power and feeling. Simply, isn't it fine? His work and our work have many different aspects of understanding, and therefore, our works are spiritually linked. So your impression is a correct way to view it, but there are other impressions in others’ minds’ which can be equally correct!
Q8 : How is the Japanese music scene?
Unfortunately, metal music in the 80’s and progressive/hard rock in the 70’s were past movements here in Japan. These days, pop artists are almost considered like demigods! However, some true listeners here are bored of that scene and accept our music. Thus, we are supported by core fans.
Q9 : How is your live performance?
We always re-enact the recorded materials, and never shorten or omit songs. It's our way! We carry out our songs energetically with Japanese bands, for example, Ningen-Isu, Onmyo-Za, Inugami-Circus-Dan, Sigh, Defiled, etc. We have also appeared as opening acts for The Black Dahlia Murder, Anekdoten, Slavior, DAEMONIA, etc. These bands genres are inconsistent. However, our music has many different sounds and aspects. So we can be accepted in the concept of almost every gig.
Q10 : Why does Anoji use extreme vocals?
She was a big fan of death metal; she already had a background of extreme metal before she joined gonin-ish. Therefore, it was natural for her to use an extreme and an angelic voice at the same time, and she selected this way to better express our basic concept of “invisible awe.”
Don't you think that the mixture of female whispers, clean singing, and extreme vocals is more exciting than when from a male? It can be considered as part of a kind of true progressive music.
