About me: In “America’s favorite small, southern town,” chain restaurants and food courts are not the going thing. Rather, consumers have come to appreciate a handful of independent establishments that have earned deep-seated loyalty based on their great food, amiable atmospheres, and reasonable pricing.
Located in what was once the home of the landmark “King Burger,” Goober’s 52 has quickly escalated to institutional status as a contemporary place for “food gone wild.” That is, food with a memorable presentation and ferocious good taste.
Goober’s laidback, funky atmosphere and signature servings of lobster reubens, barbecued salmon sandwiches and Black Jack burgers have been pleasing crowds since the restaurant’s opening in 2003. Diners were quick to embrace Goober’s unique blend of eclectic, retro-funk décor, upbeat, island zydeco music, and exceptionally palatable entrees that rival the taste of many more expensive eateries in Manhattan, New Orleans, and coastal cities.
Although located on busy US Highway 52 (aka The Andy Griffith Parkway, after Mount Airy’s famous, favorite son) the restaurant is an oasis of congeniality and warmth, commandeered by the affable and friendly owner/chef, David Parks.
Parks (personified by the giant, smiling “Goober” caricature emblazoned on the wall above the open bar and grill) is the perfect host. He excels in making first timers feel like regulars, and regulars feel like family.
You can’t book, but if you have to wait briefly the for a table, it’s well worth the wait. Relax and enjoy the camaraderie, the outdoor terrace during Mount Airy’s early springs and Indian summers, and a selection from Goober’s extensive beer and wine list.
