When country music legend, songwriting multi-hall of famer Tom T. Hall (a.k.a. The Storyteller) decided to cease touring and park the bus his obsessive, animal rescue activist, songwriting, bluegrass lovin’ wife, Ms. Dixie wasn’t ready to let him off the “creative hook.” “Just because you’re retired from the road doesn’t mean you can’t still write,” she told him. Tom T., it seemed, had visions of golf courses, a winter house in Florida, and long, sunny, stress free days working around their Tennessee farm, Fox Hollow. He informed Ms. Dixie that he had no desire to become involved in the Music Row lifestyle of creating for commercial goals then went on to elaborate that getting songs recorded in this day and time of popular country has become big business. Ms. Dixie persisted they did not need to traffic in commercial “fluff” but write only “real” songs from the heart. The comeback from Tom T. was a challenge to Ms. Dixie to write enough songs for an album which would go into the studio and have demoed. In short, she did and he did and soon Tom T., his interest piqued, was writing along with her and the promised demo became a master project for Nancy Moore and was released on Pinecastle Records. Having sold Hallnote Music to Nashville producer, Tom Collins, Tom T. & Ms. Dixie formed a new BMI publishing company which Ms. Dixie named Good Home Grown Music and, no better way to describe what they were setting out to write, good bluegrass songs, home grown on their Fox Hollow farm. It was to be followed by Blue Circle Records and a state of the art acoustic recording studio. All endeavors to be Ms. Dixie’s new occupational toy to keep her off the dog show circuits and out of the animal rescue fundraising which took over the stately mansion and Tom T.’s life. Later, More Home Grown Music was formed in order to accommodate songs with ASCAP writers such as Billy Smith & Alecia Nugent. All this began in 1999, and has been going strong since then. There are many recorded songs in the Good Home Grown Music catalog and more in the wings and on the way. The Halls’ songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, super stars and new comers, solo and bands, and it is not unusual for them to have as many as five songs on the charts at one time. 1. Since they have formed Good Home Grown Music, Ms. Dixie & Tom T. have been Songwriter Of The Year for eight years in a row and proudly received the Master’s Gold Award from SPBGMA: Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America and the Lifetime Achievement Award, Recorded Event & Bluegrass Album Of The Year from IBMA: International Bluegrass Music Association.
