THANK YOU. GOOD IS PLANET EARTH OUR VISION STATEMENT; To raise awareness of environmental issues at the roots of society: the adult, the child, the artist, the business person, the official....the community. And thus, with strong roots, we can move to influence the wider world of which we are but caretakers. How will we do this? With research, with action, with music, with art – but most of all with education and awareness aimed at reducing our impact on the environment................................ CHARITABLE ECO ALBUM LAUNCHED. Good is Planet Earth came to the Big Green Gathering as a recently formed charitable organization intent on spreading the message of recognition that the astounding planet we take for granted is becoming wounded and fragmented. Neglect and failure to acknowledge that the health of the planet depends on a complex web of finely tuned interactions is leading to indisputable evidence of damage and rapid change, directly attributable to the actions of large sections of humanity. The atmosphere is changing, the balance of chemistry in the oceans is altering, ice caps are melting, deserts are expanding, we are rapidly losing species, forests are disappearing, coral reefs are dying – the list goes on. The end result? We do not yet fully understand the consequences of our actions, but we do know that future generations will not thank us for the legacy we leave them unless we begin to act, and quickly, to try to restore balance. If ours is an age of anxiety at the uncertainty of the effects of climate change, then now is the time to move towards a long overdue age of responsibility and care of our planet; if this is all we can do in the time we have then it will be a major achievement, and hopefully not too late. We at Good is Planet Earth, therefore, believe that change must occur at root level. We do not want to fly high with our charity, rather we want to dig deep, lay new foundations, new roots, all of which say we will bind our planet together with understanding, responsibility, care and consideration. There are many ways we wish to spread our message, but the Big Green Gathering is, we feel, ultimately a place of expression. Music at the festival was our chosen medium of expression. We took the most moving, the most innovative, the saddest, the happiest, the most thought provoking of all we heard (and there was much we didn't hear!), and recorded an album via the power of the sun. With the kind permission of the artists we recorded, the dedicated involvement of Kat and crew at the Theater Tent, and Mike and his team at the Ogham Tree, all music was recorded using a portable 24 -track recording studio (transported around site by bicycle!), and powered by solar energy. The sun shone, the rain came down, mud and greenery were evident everywhere – and people listened, they danced and sang whilst the artists and organizers gave us the deep felt power and message of their talent and work for free, and for that we are extremely grateful. Back in Cornwall we contacted Dare at the VIP Recording Studios in Penzance, and he graciously donated his time and expertise in mastering the album to its professional finish. He said he hopes to gain a place in heaven for this, but we hope he'll simply be part of a better Earth! Thanks Dare. We think the finished product is a true representation of a festival where people from all walks of life attend, but with one thing in common: they all have a passion for nature. Likewise the music on the album represents a broad cross-section: jazz, reggae, beat-box, folk, rock, and more. And again, we feel its coherence comes from the unified donation of the artists and all concerned towards a charitable planet. We only regret that we could not include more artists on the album, but hopefully as our roots grow we will be able to attend again and bring you more music powered by the sun. The album will only be available as a download because after careful consideration we felt that the petrochemical content and carbon footprint involved in the production of CD's would not allow us to do so. We realize that potentially this could limit the audience we reach, but we did not feel we could produce a CD until an eco-friendly version is available. All proceeds from the sale of the album will be re-invested in our organization and dedicated to spreading environmental education, awareness and action through similar and more varied projects.
