Cinematic is as dead-on as any reasonable description for the fifty
minute instrumental debut by Blackpool, England’s GOONIES NEVER SAY
DIE. An adventurous, stunning piece of work, In A Forest Without Trees
is an intricate mixture of progressive rock and atmospherics doused
with an emotional to and fro that pulls and releases in all the right
places. Balancing lush, minor landscapes of sound with big swathes of
noisy, firepeaked crescendos, GOONIES make the quieter bits sound
every bit as compulsive as the explosive highlights. This is headphone
music at its finest: swelling dynamics, colorful interludes, thick
melodies...like a fireworks display, only sometimes in slow motion.
Truly a remarkable debut from a young band that you will soon start
hearing a lot more about.
REVIEWS
"Bursting with promise from every orifice (I'm not kidding), "In A Forest Without Trees" may finish 2009 as the year's most unexpected post-rock hit. Goonies Never Say Die accomplished the simple task of channeling vastly different emotions without words. That actually sounds pretty hard, but maybe it's just that it sounds easy coming from them. A chainsawing guitar here, a soft lull there; In A Forest Without Trees is a true journeyman's album. It has a song for pretty much any mood you might find yourself trapped within. Mixtape Immortality, here we come!" - AbsolutePunk
“A stunning, well balanced debut with vision. Wonderful landscapes
imprinted with the kind of textures often pioneered by Explosions In
The Sky and Mogwai.” - Manchester Music
"A fantastic debut that manages to stand on its own, these five guys (strictly no synths!) from Blackpool have created a work that is emotional, driving, dramatic and oh so cinematic. So much so that about half of these tracks could make it into any Hollywood blockbuster without even lifting a finger. Listening to it on the underground, I kept expecting to see Keanu Reeves come flying through the door scissor-kicking commuters in slow motion, and I mean that in the best possible way. The press release for the album states, quite rightly, that "this is headphone music at its finest". I have spent the last few days, blissfully in my own little world, ignoring the bemused looks of passers by air drumming my way through the album with a rolled up London Lite. While the spectre of Explosions in the Sky is clearly evident, Goonies Never Say Die have still created something original with a distinct sound, which pays homage to their influences rather than merely copying them. Firstly they are much rockier, and have a harder edge, almost to the point of aggression. The emotive response is still heart-rendering but is more driving. This is music to walk to. The composition of the tracks is exceptional, mixing it up between slow quiet melancholic sections and emphatic guitar harmonies that are awe-filled and inspiring. Never is it more evident than in 'Get All Your Ducks in a Row', my personal favourite track off the album. It starts out slowly, with a riff that could be straight off of Fourtet, and builds, leading into an incredibly catchy chorus riff which with each burst of drums escalates higher and higher. It recedes into a wistful interlude almost and comes crashing back. Each track surges and recedes, is driving and inspiring yet emotionally trying at the same time. It's an excellent debut...and definitely puts Goonies Never Say Die on the map as ones to look out for." - Subba Culture
"Post-rock I could have listened to pleasantly for hours on repeat, a few 'wow' moments include the brilliantly eerie "The Scene Where Everyone Dies" which would be perfect for the movie scene the title suggests, and "Sometimes It's Not So Bad", which is actually the shortest song on the album (intro aside) at 3 minutes and 40 seconds long, however, in that short time it manages to build up to a rousing crescendo. For Fans of: Codes In The Clouds, Sunlight Ascending, Caspian." - RockFreaks
"Goonies Never Say Die, a prog-rock band from across the pond (UK), have managed to put together an astounding 50 minute sonic journey with their latest album. Vocals are often overrated, and much like the other heightened senses of a blind person, GNSD take dissonance/echo-heavy guitars, wavy melody, stripped-down percussion, and warming piano and go to work painting a very endearing musical picture...one without words, using the personality of their instruments and arrangements alone. Almost every track has a solid release of studio-session indie rock, with waves of progressive sonic overtures. "In A Forest Without Trees" is very electric with subtle (and blatant) majestic and ascending progressive rock" - Bring On Mixed Reviews
"The first track, “Intro”, is a rapid and energy-packed foreword to the adventure that is about to begin. Once safely strapped in, the listener experiences a range of emotions throughout the track listing, from determined and brave to inquiring and dreamy. The best parts of the album, though, are those that are high tempo, with hard-rocking guitar and cymbal-heavy percussion work. “This One Took Forever”, a title which is perhaps a testament to the hard work put into the most well-honed track of the album, is an example of the fantastic, fluid transitions from erupting energy to lower-tempo sections, and back again. Every instrument in the track, and those that follow, flow together into an organic, fluid package" - The Silent Ballet
"Ace as tits" - Matt Sellers
